    small knock in steering wheel

Just lately I notice a small knock being transmitted through the steering wheel. Mainly occurs at lower speeds when hitting small sharp bumps driving around town (say 50 k/h). Holding the steering wheel and pushing up toward the windscreen, then pulling down toward the seat I can feel a tiny amount of play.

Underneath all rod ends are tight, it has 4 new ball joints (the big ones), new shock and springs, and I can't feel any obvious play in other bushes.....except there is a little movement in the rubber bushes holding the torsion bar (non-ace).

So, I'm thinking I'll replace those first.

But are there any bushes on the steering column itself that wear out and need replacing?? Up near the steering wheel? Can't see anything in RAVE?

    Help appreciated!

    Tilt adjustment

Thanks Alex - tilt adjustment seems fine - but good idea to check it again anyway.

I suspect the problem might be something else worn in the suspension that is resulting in the shock being transmitted up the steering wheel.

But would really like to hear if anyone else has had similar issues?

    thanks

Have you checked the steering shaft universals? They are the small 1s in the shaft from steering wheel to steering box 2 of. They do wear and can be a source of a "knock".

    Good suggestions

Thanks Northiam and Schuy1 - good suggestions.

Scott - The short shaft with the 2 universals definitely has some play in it - but not sure how much is too much? I suppose at 270k it may be up for replacement anyway....

Northiam - Bit scared of the 'remove the airbag' bit!! Will check RAVE but is it easy?

    Thanks

That short shaft between the box and column with the universals is VERY prone to failure if left loose long enough!. It is important to make sure the pinch bolts are tight as they WILL chew away the inner aluminium spline and eventually rotate uselessly and you will have NO steering.

    I have seen this happen

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

What he says! There should be no or at the most very tiny movement in the unis and none on the shaft!

I've noticed a small knock in the steering wheel, mainly going at lower speeds around roundabouts, just as the steering wheel crosses across the centre line.
Couldn't convince my mechanic there was an issue there.

    Will check

Will check all of the bushes in the front suspension on the weekend.

Also will order a replacement for the short shaft with the two unis

Thanks to all for valuable suggestions - will let you know how I get on

I hate any looseness in the steering!

    thanks
