Check that the wastegate isn't stuck open on the turbo? Any hissing noises (split intercooler hose)? Sounds like a lack of boost kind of issue I would check the wastegate and turbo operation first to make sure things are boosting up correctly.
Hi there,
This morning when out with family I was comfortably sitting on 110km/h on the flats and the hills when I saw a plume of black smoke come out the back of the car. The car as such made no noise or even appeared to feel different apart from the significant lack of power on the hills.
The car isn't over heating and there is no loss of engine oil or water. I drove it back on the flat at 90km/h the last 100km back to home. It was only the hills that took the power out of it. Only every now again would the black plume appear out the back whilst driving along and this seems when I accelerated.
From my limited understanding of cars this sounds like it could be some sort of fuel issue. I just had a new oem FPR put in the week before by a mechanic. It did have to go back a second time as the first time it was still leaking diesel on the road. The mechanic had it back a second time and had to have helicoils put in so that he could tighten it up to stop the leak.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Regards
Tony

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.
In a stationary position: The engine seems to sound like it always has. It certainly sounds smooth and doesn't misfire at all. If I apply the accelerator it certainly appears to make all the right noises as if it is stationary when you are not driving.
Asked the son with a younger set of ears to listen around the intercooler hose and basically all over the motor. Neither him or I could hear any hissing. The vehicle doesn't sound like any fuel starvation at all. It just that there is no power to climb a hill
Checked the recently new FPR and there appears to be no leaks coming from around it. Don't know exactly what the wastegate is at the moment but I have the RAVE so am looking that up now.

black smoke is more fuel than the air can handle.
give the intercooler hoses a squeeze with the engine shut down. if they feel lumpy or notchy as you squeeze them they are most definately stuffed, if they feel soft to squeeze they are likely to be stuffed.
you could also have a collapsed air filter.

Hi Guys,
I have taken off the air filter cover to see the hoses below that are near what I think is the turbo.
I have attached 3 photos
Pic 1: (showing the air filter in the bottom). The hose that is in the centre of the photo that appears ribbed is so soft to squeeze that it feels that it would collapse easily. Would this be one of the problems causing the symptoms?
Pic 2: Show a plastic pipe that attaches between the hose mentioned above and another small hose that goes up to what I think is the turbo. Also the very short pipe to the right that I think goes into the turbo is quite soft and squeezy also. Also note that there is a little pipe that has some stain that comes off the hard pipe. It is so soft that I reckon I could collapse it if I tried to drink water through it. It goes up the wastegate modulator. The one on the other side of the wastegate modulator is quite firm.
Pic 3: another photo of the short soft pipe that comes off what I believe is the turbo.
Please let me know how I am tracking with your responses too guys.
Regards
Tony
Hi guys
Here are another two photos after a decided to pull out what I described in the previous entry.
Pic 4: This is the hose that I described as being very soft. The pressure I am applying to the hose is virtually not existent it is so soft.
Pic 5: This is another hose on the other side of the engine that goes into the EGR. Would this hose also be related to the intercooler system? It is a little hard in places and also appears to be a little swollen but not by much.
Whilst I profess to know nothing about cars I am sort of enjoying the problem solving with you guys. I must admit I am glad I am not doing this on the side of the road.
Look forward to more of your comments.
they are all intercooler hosesits usually the ones on the turbo side that go first starting with the really bendy one.
what you do now is..
ring 0732846688 which is MR automotives number
say "Dave from ipswich said my disco 2's turbo and intercooler hoses are shot and that you should send me a complete set of silicone intercooler hoses and EGR blank and bypass kit as well as one of the td5 secret hidden heater hoses"
they will probably say
"certainly that will be XX much, where do you wan them sent and what is your credit card number"
at which point you tell them your home address and give them your credit card details and if you want it express posted tell them that too.
then you wait 3-5-7 days for the postal system to do its thing and then you get to start your first tech thread question ing what are all these parts and how do I Put them in, what tools do I need.
Someone will tell you to use the search engine, this topics been done to death, someone else will tell you that you need a 1/4 inch drive socket set with a screwdriver handle and a couple of extensions, a pair of slip joint pliers and a good set of allen keys to as well as a #2 phillips and a 10mm spanner to get the acoustic cover off to give you access.
At that point the debate on turfing or keeping the acoustic shield will fire up (again) at which point you need to pay attention to those who say turf and ignore those who are silly enough to want to keep the fire and maintenance hazard in place.
someone else will notice that in a photo of the gear that turns up will be your secret hidden heater hose and the whole thread will get side tracked into things you need to watch when you change that, checking loose manifold bolts and turbo drain hoses will come up and a last person will notice that the use of slipjoint pliers has been mentioned to undo the spring hose clamps at which point the debate will rage over the use of constant pressure vs screw type vs spring clamps for keeping hoses in place and at last someone will remember to mention what type of sealant to use on the gaskets and blanker for the EGR blank/bypass kit bringing it all back to a close when you complete the task in a very confused manner with your mind weighed heavy with all the different opinions and irrelevent facts then you'll take it for a test drive fly past some toyota belching smoke up some slight incline and feel really good about yourself.
Naturually you will also be worried about all the other things that get bought up as "while youve got the bonnet up and are doing X you might as well check and replace Y" which mitsoytasan drivers always heap on us about right up untill they break down because they never do enough preventative maintenance because like the sheeple they are they believe the hype that their masters drivel in advertising while the landy engineers just get on with setting records and letting the marque speak for itself honestly. And with all the preventative maintenance done you'll finally understand why Landy drivers (well except for freelanders, p38 and evoke owners (what the hell guys)) wave at each other. We know and we understand.
Then in about a weeks time someone else will post up another thread asking "my td5s down on power and belching black smoke" and you get to come up with "heeeey, I just did that, heres how you do it and while your at it you might also want to check...... and these are the tools I used to do it all, If you're not too far away Im happy to lend a hand...."
And thats about it.

Hey that is really detailed and really appreciated.
Before reading your post I had already ordered a set of the silicone hoses. I had ordered the EGR bypass kit about 5 days ago after reading a whole lot of threads on it.
The secret hose is the only thing I won't have.
Shame I sort of jumped the gun and ordered the gear before your post.
Have to say that after all this when the next TD5 owner has the same symptoms I will be certainly letting him know what I learned and that I picked up the knowledge from you guys.
Will hopefully be able to start work on the car next weekend and get it back on the road.
I can say the missus isn't happy with me getting the Disco 2 back in Feb of this year. I have had a few things go wrong with it which have all been fixed when they became evident. Missus just got a new VW Amarok and asked me if she should sell her reliable old Rodeo (it was certainly reliable) just in case. Well it was sold a week before this problem. Now she is beating herself up about it. Doesn't like going out in the Discovery because of it being very unreliable. I have to say I sort of agree with her.
But can't help but love them. I had a Disco 1 and a Series III before too. Just something about them that I just can't shake for some reason.
Will let you guys know how I go when I get the parts.
Cheers Tony
