    Uni Spiders - Front D2

    Ok problem

Got 3 new uni joints today for my old boys D2 2002 (non center locked) td5

Ok removed the badly worn uni in the cardan joint tried to replace with the new item supplied from reputable outlet.... This is where the problem started...........

Over an hour and a half trying to get the second C clip to seat with out success! (no damage ) even tried compressing in bench vice with the old cups still no home....

Also noticed that the spider was siting offset to center a smidge (by eye) hard on the C clip that was home. This is never going to last Spider has to be centered....

Then out with the smart stick and measured up the relaxed cup distance of 75.1mm and compressed 74.7mm

Then C clip to C clip 73.5 (inside the shaft section on the cardan joint *closest to the transfer*)

    ?????

74.7mm ain't ever going to fit in the 73.5mm gap without MAJOR help from a large knockometer

So for now I am looking for genuine parts for an answer........
Smart stick on the next removed join yoke end (diff) measured 73.4mm (Stock item) Shock horror that's what I need....................

Reputable shop said "They work for us" you don't know what you are doing.....

Uni replacement is a 5 min job for me on anything I work on, This ain't my first crack....

Any help ideas solutions advise, Many thanks in advance
Not naming anyone in this nor looking to say poor parts but I am not going to let anyone shoe horn something that is not the right size into a housing on a prop shaft period.

The only issue with the joint was the one spider that was badly worn what I did notice also is that someone had smashed in the housing making it impossible to remove 1 cup (Kinda make you think that someone has had this issue before and rolled the machined edge to stop the clip and cup from moving on one side only) Hmmmm ! ! !

I can say this for one that a Sticker is going to be removed from the vehicle tomorrow...

Then again I could be wrong lets find out!

    Cheers

sounds like one or more of the uni roller bearings needles has dislodged and fallen in the cup stopping you driving them in far enough?
    Maybe

Havn't you answered your own question?

The replacement units are a different size (by your own measurements), not much, but different enough that they don't fit (by your own attempts). Generally the first rule of changing a part is to make sure it's the same as the one your replacing - in this case they aren't. Return them and try a different brand or genuine parts.

    Try genuine?

Otherwise upgrade to a Tom Woods drive shaft, there better quality units.

Did you search the forum for the Double Cardan uni part numbers? There has been a lot of information posted on the forum over the years about what works, so might be worth checking to make sure you haven't been given a bum steer.

Have sourced the right parts from British Off Road they were very helpful and also measured there item up to be sure and have the right number's Happy days

Also nearly 1/2 the price...... Even Better!

Seems I was right. I love being told I am wrong!

Moral always check measurments before selling a customer something!
