Thermostat sounds like a good bet.
Anyone had a wacky temp gauge ??
The last couple of mornings been noticing the temp gauge slow to rise, which is a bit weird as normally but a x amount of K's or time it comes up to horizontal.
Then this morning it came up and hovered just above the 1st mark maybe 1/4 to 1/3 on the temp scale when normally it would be half, I just thought Oh yeah bit cool last nite it will come up soon, well 40 k's down the road nearly to work it fluctuated to the normal spot and then dropped back down to the 1/4 to 1/3 mark again...
Once at work I idled down and checked levels and the like and all good no leaks or "unknown" noises.
The return home this arvo was similar but by about the halfway mark it rose to normal position.
So brains trust what might this be...

3 months ago hoses changed but not thermostat
Yes it has a low coolant alarm
Could this be a dicky thermostat ??
I am lead to believe the temp gauge gets its signal from the BCU could that be the problem.
Not toooo worried ATM but hey its a LR D2 of course its not going to be a cheap or easy fix..
I am about 3 weeks away from a 2K round trip and dont want the "Gremillins" spoiling it.
TIA Dazza
that was wow super quick...
I agree! thermostat sounds likely culprit, probably stuck open, better than stuck shut.
Trev.
If its not the thermostat - good idea to check change it of an old fella anyway - then its probably a bad earth - that what was wrong with mine (in the TD5 RRC) which had similar issues to yours.

Thanks everyone, I said it would cost me .... just got 2 prices one $50 and one $88 from the local LR guys didnt think there would be such a price diff especially since I didnt even try the Newie LR stealer.
Wife has muttered something about ebay and a left......
At least its easy to get to.
I don't think a stuck thermostat will cause fluctuations - slow to heat up and lower than normal running temps would be more likely.
I'd be looking at temp sender and wiring - the edge of the head near the sender is a potential rub point for the harness.
The Temp sender is hooked up to the Td5 engine ECU which then reports the temp to other ecu's.
Cheers
Paul
Add: the gauge doesn't hit normal until around low-mid 70's so if the coolant temp is around that point due to a failed thermostat minor variations could cause it to move to 1/2 and then drop back.
