Ok, back 'home' and have a rattle at 2250RPM in all gears when cold.

    It disappears when warm?

At least I have a great list here now to check off.

This place is an excellent resource when you're new to an engine.

    That was my first thought....

and sounds like it's coming from that area.

The noise is still there when warm, not totally gone but is much more subdued.

Try pulling the handbrake on "gently" when you are driving at 2100-2200 RPM.
If the noise stops you have scored backing plate and worn linings.

Looks like what it is, thanks for the heads up.
Can feel it through the handbrake lever until the shoes start to engage the drum.

    Harmonics/balance of the 5 I'm guessing.

Never had it on the Tdi Deefer either, although 'refinement' and 'quietness' aren't quite Defender long suits so I may not have noticed it over the 'character' either
