Federal Couragia A/Ts or Kelly Safari ATRs?
My Maxxis have given out after 40K, I'm in the market for new tyres and won't do the Maxxis again (blew the sidewall out of 2 tyres while in the Barrington Tops). Anyhow, does anyone have any experience running Federal Couragia A/Ts or Kelly Safari ATRs?

I've just done a lot of research on tyres and although I don't have them myself (I went for Toyo Open Country MT) in my research the Kelly Safari seemed to get good write ups more so than the Couragia.

I have the Couragia M/T's. Probably won't go there again, they wore a lot in the first 5000k's (worryingly so), chip a lot on the radius arms and are quite noisy and need frequent rotation (even though I've had the alignment done 3 times in 20,000k's).
I'm going back to Bridgestone 697's, they have good reports and seem to work well in a wide variety of conditions.

Kelly ATR report
I thought I would update everyone on the tyres. I purchased the Kelly's and after 8000K I have had 2 tyres blow on a trip from Sydney to Adelaide. Tyre pressures were fine, and only had a small amount of camping gear in the back. One tyre went on the highway, one on a gravel road. I'll be talking to Tyrepower about what they can do. Suffice it to say, after owning 4 different cars (including the Disco), and buying numerous sets of tyres, I have never had something like this happen. I won't be going Kelly again.

Unlucky!!
im sure you wouldnt have been much happier with the couragias in the a/t pattern. They are average on wet roads. The bridgestone 697s are pretty good and so are the older 694s. I travelled approx 70,000 kms on 694s and they went well.
The best wearing and performing all terrain tyre I have had is Kumho kl61. Not an overly aggressive a/t but was excellent on wet bitumen and on dirt. This was a quiet and long lasting tyre in the light truck range.
Ive also had BFG at`s which were good, kumho kl78 ats which wore quickly but performed okay, good year wrangler silent armour ats and a few mud patterns too. The kumho kl61 was the best of them for 90% road and 10% dirt and track. Very average in mud though.
Looks like your going to struggle to trust replacements of the tyre youve chosen. Might be worth talking to the tyre shop and seeing if they will change them for a different brand.

The Federals dont seem to be popular but I chose them because there were only 2 Tyre choices in Australia in the size and Load rating to suit my truck,
The Federal at $300 each, and the other with a less agressive tread was $585
I did not really want an MT either and thought they would be rubbish for what I do but after 6000km there is no noticible tread wear , they have been great in all conditions but as mentioned are very noisy.

BFGoodrich All Terrains T/A KO.
I'm not sure that they actually are that much better than the many other brands and models (I keep looking at Kuhmo's tyre range too as in the USA they are priced similarily to BFG and many still buy the Kuhmo's there over the BFG, where here in Australia we pay a premium price for BFG), but they continually get a great wrap on all the forums and on a wide variety of vehicles (noting that a few years ago there does seem to have been a quality control issue, but that seems to have passed) and I've had no dramas with them in my personal use either. When it comes to tyres it's not worth risking so I have purchased what I thought to be the best.

I've got Kelly Safari ATR 235/85/16 on my heavily laden 130, done 40,000kms and approx 10mm tread left - seems like plenty of life in them yet. No punctures so far. I have 2 Federal ATs as spares, but haven't had to put them on. I think I paid $210 each for the Federals so seemed like good value as spares. I'll probably get 2 more when the Kelly's are out and run them as my main tyres.
The Kelly ATR tread pattern is a much more open block than the Federal AT.
