    Td5 running with fuel pump disconnected, correct?

    I've been having issues with my 2003 manual D2a Td5 taking upto 5 seconds to start, regardless of engine temp.

    I've replaced the injector harness (harness & ECU now complete oil free), replaced all the injector 'O' rings and copper washers (Although there was/is no indication of diesel in the sump), fitted a new FPR (Old one had a slight leak), fitted a new Cat 1000CCA battery, and replaced the 'check valve' at the fuel filter. Nothing has made any difference over the lenght of time to start

    So today I was playing with the fuel pump relay & fuse, and found that with both the fuel pump fuse and relay removed the engine would start, idle and allow the Disco to be driven upto 60Kmh (Max speed limit in close range of my house) including up hills. The engine is down on power, but is still very drivable with the pump not running.

    I know the pump is definitely not running as with the relay fitted and then putting the fuse in and out there is a small spark, plus the fuel pipe from the FPR to the front of the engine moves slighlty with the increase of pressure.

    So is this normal?

    PS Any other ideas on the slow starting?

    Yes they will run without the pump going, just if it leaks down overnight say, thats it, no go! The slow starting is related to the pump most likely, Time for a new 1!

    Heya,

    I replaced my fuel pump over the last weekend.... see my thread (sorry not sure how to add a thread link to the post).

    Its no a hard job to do at all..... only issue can be the price of a new pump.

    I sourced a tested second hand fuel pump from Triumph and Rover Spares in Lonsdale SA, and it took me about an hour to replace.

    The biggest time waster is getting at the fuel pump inspection plate, which hides under the rear cargo bay carpet, do a search here for instructions on how to gain access to the plate.

    The only other issue I had was getting the locking ring back in place, had to enlist the help of the wife to hold the fuel pump down, while I got the locking ring screwed in place.

    NOTE: Terminology used above may not be entirely correct names for the parts, so I apoligise to anyone who is offended by the incorrect use of part names

    I've been reading you week of doom thread! Have just ordered a new VDO pump from the UK £190 including delivery, I'm not currently in a rush as the car is still going ok apart from the slow starting. Sods law it will fail completly tomorrow now

    Will be looking to replace it via the floor, and not by dropping the tank. Haven't had a propper look into it yet, so not sure if the complete rear section of carpet needs to come out, or if it can be 'folded' out of the way.

    I got mine from here https://www.lrdirect.com/WFX000280-s...anded-oem.html as they had an additional 8% discount on ALL Britpart supplied parts and had a few other things to get, but here is another good option Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order. I have used Island in the past with no issues, and currently have another order in process with them for a set of TD5 hoses.
