    Discovery 2 Annoying Sound

    Hi guys,

I've created a new thread due to an ongoing noise I'm getting from the engine on my discovery. It still sounds like it's coming from the alternator but so far have:

Changed the main tensioner and pulley
    Changed the idler pulley
Refurbished alternator with new bearings and bushings

The mechanic who assured me that the sound had gone, now thinks it could be the oil pump so wants to give it an oil change and check the pressure. Reading on other people with similar noises, maybe it's a vacuum leak? Please give me your thoughts. I've already thrown $600 at the problem and starting to get tight for cash. Here is a video with the sound starting around 1.18. Ignore me checking the abs connections, that's been sorted I hope. This was before the fixes above, but it sounds the same:

    Any ideas?

Have you thought of the water pump bearing. Pretty common in older V8s.

If you can make or buy a stethoscope and place it on each component that has a bearing. Don't use a doctors one with its amplifier or you will go deaf.LOL
If you can get access even a long screwdriver held against the ear will do it.

Don't expect to hear the same noise , but you will hear a relatively constant hiss from good bearings and a loud gravelly noise form the bad one.

Interesting you say that. Apparently the last owner changed the water pump and that's when the noise started. I just thought he was full of ****, but it could be a bad water pump?

I've had two guys and a go myself with a stethoscope to try spot it which lead to the replacements so far.

Remove the aux belt then start her up!
    Eliminates all belt driven acc's.

Remove the main serpentine belt? I guess this would show if it's the oil pump or not. Not sure what else would be making that noise without a belt, definitely sounds like a bearing.

With the belt removed it should be quiet and will confirm its not the oil pump or timing chain etc.
10 seconds with no belt cant hurt.

    Hi,

Yeah, the problem is sometimes it takes a minute to start doing it, or when the car warms up it sometimes doesn't do it as much at idle. It's a weird sound, but is present most of the time. How long is it safe to leave the belt off?

Well if you start from cold, you should have several minutes with no load near idle but you should be careful. Remember you do not have a water pump operating.

Remove the serp belt, check all the driven items by hand, even the replaced 1s. feel for any roughness, movement etc. Do each slowly and in BOTH directions. If nothing is felt / noticeable, start it up and let it idle , you have a few minutes, thermo siphoning will circulate the water quite well at idle through the radiator. I think you will find it is either the water pump or the belt itself.
    Cheers Scott

PS check the pulley grooves are clean and not burred also

Thanks for the advice, I'll see if I can take the belt off this weekend.
