A failed MAF won't have that kind of gross temperature dependant performance effect on a Td5.
Check the fuel and coolant temp sensors. There are fuelling adjustments done until the engine reaches operating temp so if one of these as failed you would see cold start and running issues.
You can test with a multimeter - the resistance charts vs temps are in RAVE:

Not sure if this is a help but I found recently that my TD5 ran quite rough when cold starting particularly if it had sat for a week.
The glow plugs were not working so I replaced them and it made no difference.
It would start then stall start, then stall then start again and would run normally.
A Month or so ago I had the head gasket changed and its now all normal
No idea why but its now starts like any other diesel.
