Thread: Temp guage gone whacky!

Peoples thinking of constantly improving upon a design is a good one as it drives innovation.

However, in the case of older vehicles this is sometimes a point that is forgotten:

Let's say that the vehicle we acquire is now 10 years old.
That vehicle has run the standard gear for 10 years without issue and is now starting to age a few items to the point they are failing.

So they look to improve the design with an aftermarket type fix or repair.

Items like radiators, and the aforementioned hose are prime examples.

Now consider, for 10 years the OEM gear has safely and effectively carried out its task without issue.

In this instance, it would be fair to say the original part has proven successfully to be suited to the task.

Will a selection of rubber coolant hose last 10 more years? Or will the factory part perform just like the original?

Rubber hose is just as subject to ageing and failure.

Whichever way Miss Dragon goes will likely last the period of her ownership in this case.

a friend of mine just got one of those hoses new, and it is a harder plastic, and in no way flexible. theres no way that one could have been folded and then left to rest to original shape. perhaps hers is not an actual genuine part but an after market copy? i cant say for sure as not sure where she got it from but i just assumed it was. i have seen similar plastic used in other applications through my trade, and in my experience its never faired well. I do agree with tombie though in saying that it does last 10 years or more, i could have just been unlucky, but dont we all make judgements based on our own personal experience with particular things? which is nothing wrong with that at all, if we all shared same opinions then the world would be one boring place

i feel people seem to be getting a bit defensive here (i was a bit at first as everyone was telling me its bad but not actually why that was the case), though is hard to say through reading words, things can be taken wrongand come across harsh very easily, and im jsut trying to learn. for a female i know a hell of a lot, and am very mechanically minded, but there is always something to learn and stuff to be gained from everyone elses experiences too. i am pretty sad my copper pipe is not suitable, as it wouldnt split like any plastic hose can. But i would never have known in this application it was not right (i mean a lot of water in a house travels through copper piping, so i didnt expect it to not be suitable in this instance)
my disco will be with me for a very very long tmie to come the only way id replace it if it happened ot be written off, id then replace with with a D4 as hopefully if that ever happened its a long time frmo now! apart from my panel van, its a fantastic car for me with my disabilities speaking of which i cant go search for more pipe/hose today as flare up means i cannot drive at all right now

    thanks again all
