rear hub oil leak with loose nut.

Discovered some oil tracks on the passenger side rear wheel. Smelt of gear oil. Pulled the wheel off to discover that the hub nut had become unstaked and was barely more than finger tight. Must have been this way from the factory as that hub has never been off!
Anyway i have tightened it up but still some leakage through the nut. Looking at the cross section, it would appear that it can't be the bearing or the o ring leaking but must be coming along the spline? Do i need to re-loctite or do i need a new hub?
no oil on the disc, just on the front face of the wheel.

What did you tighten it with? The torque setting is around 460nm - so you'd need either a torque multiplier or a 3/4" torque wrench to achieve that.

There is an o-ring behind the hub. Did you replace it?

I'd pull it apart and have a look. Something is not right if the nut has come loose. Issue with the axel? Damaged thread?

At the minimum I'd suggest fitting a new o-ring, nut and staking it.

You don't need to Loctite the axel into the hub. Most of us do not do this when reassembling as they can be impossible to separate again. The axel fitting into the hub is so tight that it really should be impossible to leak through there - which is why I think you probably have a larger issue such as damaged axel.

used the 1200mm bar i made up with a 3/4" drive from the harmonic balancer episode last year. not much doesn't yield or tighten with that!
i have welded a 1/2" socket near the top on backwards so i can use my 1/2 torque wrench with a bit of maths to get the right torque. Staking was barely visible on the nut.
Good to know you don't need the loctite as 680 is not easily found.
no undue noise or vibration from the axle. Just looks like it wasn't staked properly. Glad it didn't fall off though!

The manual says the front hub needs a bead of sealant and the end of the spline to prevent leakage. I did this to the rear hub too. As for torquing the nut, I simply did a simple calc to work out the place to stand my body weight on the extension bar while it was horizontal.
