I must be getting old.
When I was young the brass onion/globe shaped filler in a compression joint was called an onion in slang terms.
I thought it was more widely used that it is.
I guess no cars have them any more so only old fogies know it.
This one is a different shape but same principle

It's the bean counters that force the quick connectors snap
fittings push fittings on cars and many other items with complex
builds blame Henry Ford for the start of it.
Manufacturers want cheap staff so they train them to do one
simple task.
To cuts build time/manufacturing costs even more cars are
assembled the most efficient way possible like Toombie says
it is often easier to remove more parts to gain access as cars
are built in layers.
Just add up all the time it takes to tighten a worm drive clip
or screw in connector and multiply it 40 odd times.
