Good tip Zypper. I did that with the other side but the the nuts were a pain in the ass to get undone after the taper had popped. I needed to ue the Allen key in the end to lock it and then undo the nut with a ring spanner. They were pretty tough to get undone. I figured I'd just try to be careful with my hammer hits.



In hindsight I probably should have left one nut loosely done up on the upright so it didn't fall on the ground.

It would have to be a high quality ball joint remover tool, and not a cheap copy as I'd imagine the stress put on that tool would be great.

Just reading thru RAVE, found some interesting info; " Each ball joint can be replaced up to three times before the axle yoke becomes oversize. Before commencing work, thoroughly clean the surface of the joint and check for yellow paint marks, approximately 12mm or 0.5 inch wide. If you see two marks, renew the axle case ." According to RAVE, if you renew the ball joint, before refitting, paint a 12mm, 0.5 inch mark where the ball sits. I guess that means, if you see two paint lines, means the joint is being replaced for the third time. Bob

There were no paint marks on mine so I'd say they must have been the original ball joints.

I'd say so, how many KM's? Interesting to see how long that wobbly bottom one had been there. I have 366300 km's., not sure if mine are original, getting a little bit concerned now. BTW, thank you for a very informative video. Bob

Mine is an 03 with 157,000Ks on the clock.


I hope these vids help some folks on here. I must however say, I'm no expert mechanic. I'm just showing how I got the job done. If I'm doing something wrong I hope the experts can chime in and set me straight. I welcome constructive criticism.


Just finished editing the footage together for the completion of the ball joint repair. Should be up soon.

Yes Michael, we appreciate the effort you taken to make these vids,especially about the ball joint removal. I have always been told they are near impossible to remove even by mechanics,so have put the job off and watching your vid makes it all look a lot easier now. Thanks for the up on the tool site, I checked out similar tools in the UK costing $100's more. Your vid shows that the cheaper tool has enough strength to do the job, so it becomes affordable as a DYi,
That what makes this site so special, Land Rover nuts taking the time to help one another and actually show how things are done. I don't think any other brand of vehicle has as much information on how to tackle jobs and repairs as there is on Land Rovers.
