Quite possibly a failed ignition lead, causing a misfire and unburnt fuel into exhaust.
Try to track down a nearby member with a diagnostic tool such as a nanocom
Gday,
I have a 2004 D2 V8. Its been running fine except for an intermittent rough idle. Its occurrence is random and it doesnt seem to register on the tacho. Ive also started to notice the exhaust smelling stronger than normal and perhaps richer. Do you think theyre related, is there anyway of pulling codes without some sort of tool? Would you reccomend cleaning the MAF??

Pull the plugs and see which one is a different colour or is coated with unburnt fuel. That'll tell you which cylinder is the problem, then replace the cheapest component first, either plug or lead.
BTW, I'm a TD5 owner, just going on legacy experience, no specific knowledge of the D2 V8 and if there are special diagnostics required.

How about running rough due to over fueling due to faulty coolant temp sensor. Might be worth considering if the basics test OK.
MAF ?
Ok, so i had the disco serviced today and had them look at the rough idle problem...they seem to think the problem is due to weak spark from the coil.
Does this seem right? I hope not, 'cause from what Ive read replacing that is a ***** of a job! The leads and plugs were replaced about a year ago, does that mean I can count them out as cause of the problem, or should i replace them first to eliminate them?
If you're going to replace plugs and leads you might as well find and fit a set of good used coils at the same time. Weak or damaged leads tend to damage the coils too. If you plan well you remove the plenum top half and then the coils become much easier to get at. I have the job down to around 1 hour now, done it a few times. The coil pack brackets are fiddly to get at but a 1/4 drive socket set and one long extension gets to the top two bolts, a couple of long extensions and you get to the bottom two. You need to have the top two out and the bottom two loosened a couple of turns to slip the plenum top out from under the coil bracket.
I wouldn't bother with 2nd hand. You can buy OEM coils new for about $40 each if you shop around. They are the same as a coil pack used on a Kia. I just bought a set and will be fitting them soon so will let you know how they go.
Cheers
Michael
Gday Michael,
Have you installed the coils yet? Just wondering how the job went and what the results were. Ive ordered a set just waiting for them to arrive, Ive bought rocker gaskets and an intake manifold gasket, is there anything else I should replace at the same time??
