    testing air suspension

    Hello Everyone,
    I'm new to this forum and I am currently looking for a discovery2 to purchase.
    I just inspected a good looking 02 model. The only thing I was concerned about is the air bag suspension. I pressed the button, it beeped and I couldn't see anything apparently happening. I didn't have time to look through the manual but I was wondering if there is any easy way to test it?
    The other thing I wanted to know is how to test the transfer case. I couldn't figure that out either.
    Also; any advice for buying td5 02 would be much appreciated.

    Just so you know air sprung landrovers won't do anything unless all doors and bonnet are shut.

    As stated driver door must be closed never really looked at others the light will flash if works and car will raise will hear the pump going once up light stays on till pressed to drop ( same as raise) if you get 3 beeps it will not work look at doors only thing you need to check is if you get to car and its sitting up if arse is on the ground then something is wrong

    Yup, all doors shut, motor running. Not just on accessories.

    If the drivers window is down, and all the other conditions are met as above, reach in & push the button. You should hear the compressor running (it's on the passenger side, underneath, between the front & back door) and should see the car raise at the back.

    You may have to hold the button in for a second or 2, but no longer. Same for lowering it again. Make sure you have the right button, and not the HDC one...

    If you have the time, raise the car, and leave it up. Turn the engine off, and then keep looking over the rest of the car. All things being equal, it shouldn't lower at all.

    As for the transfer case, put the car in neutral, move the small lever towards you. On a car of this era, you probably wont have the CDL, so it wont go sideways at all. Once the lever is all the way back, and it may be stiff, so do it with the engine running, and give it a few extra revs. You can then drive forward & backwards, but try to avoid going any great distance on hard surfaces, and don't turn any corners. If you do, you will get wind up, and that makes things go bang, and it is really difficult to get it back into high range.

    I've simplified a bit to assist you getting up to speed.

    The TD5 models with the pocketed headlights / two headlight bulbs per side (MY03 and MY04), have a centre diff lock (CDL) that could be operated in the cabin, the TD5 models with the rectangular headlights did not. The earlier models relied only on the traction control (TC) doing the work. Great idea, didn't work in practice in all situations (eg need to feed in more power to get the TC to work, which can bog you even more). Some of the earlier TD5 models have the ability to be retrofitted easier with the cable only, others take more work. Some owners moded their cars - if the lever can be pushed to the left, then they have put in the CDL. Search for more detail on this forum in the good oil.

    However, if I recall correctly, I believe that locking the CDL when factory fitted also changes the traction control characteristics and some other parameters to make the car work better off road.

    Hi, Select LOW RANGE then press the lift button, it will pump up.
    If in High range mine will beep once , but will not retain the height, it exhausts and the chime goes off a couple of times as it is designed to provide extra rear clearance for off road, not for highway travel.

    It should work even in high range. But yes all doors need to be shut.
    Just hold button in till you get a chime. The yellow dash light should flash till it is raised. THen when you drive off, it will stay at that extra ride height till you get to 30km/h or close to it. It will then lower itself back to normal ride height.

    On a Discovery 2 you can put the car in low range with out any chance of wind up occuring. The only time you will get wind up is if you lock the center diff.
    Only D2a's came with the factory lever. 99-2002(early) could be retrofitted with a lever to lock. Then there was a run in 2002 that had just an empty box. Then all the D2a's had the lever and locking mechanism fitted from the factory.
    Once locked you will get wind up.
