Really weird problem with my D2 Jack

OK I will start again. My computer hates me too.

My D2 jack has a really weird problem not covered in Blacknight's how to.
The inner shaft stuck fully up , so I tried jumping then whacked it with the back of an axe and it then went down.

I changed the oil thinking it may be a stuck check valve.

Then it would raise but the outer shaft started sticking and will not fully go down and it sticks at about 50MM up, or just long enough to not fit between the rear suspension arm and chassis.GRRRR.

It also stuck at various positions in lifting, and I guess I have now blown the seals in both shafts, as I persisted in pumping when stuck thinking it would unstick but NOOOOO.
I wonder if there is a band of rust in the outer shaft bore that is REALLY catching the seal and not allowing the shaft to retract and also one in the inner shaft.
It seems to me if it is a valve problem it would either not operate at all or operate fully but not part operate. It lifts OK from the point that it is stuck, but is ****ing out oil everywhere now.

Any ideas or should i not waste time on it and get a new one.
    Regards Philip A

its been bent or one of the pistons has gone oval shape from being side loaded while in a semi extended position.

Drain all the oil out of it, open the return valve, raise the piston by hand extraction and then see if it collapes downwards smoothly. Repeat the process while turning the lifting head.

it is also possible for the seal support to have gone to a gooey consistency and be wedging themselves in the tolerances between the walls of the jack.

I have tried unsuccsesfully to repalce teh seals on the standard D2a (probably same as other models) jack with no succses
    got a 10,000kg Draper instead.

However this deosnt fit in the bay in teh engine compartment so I shall follow up on the how to and and see if I can get better / more appropriate seals

    Ok here is the outcome.
I worked out that the large ram was bent and oval by about 0.3MM ( using a vernier as my micrometer is not big enough.)
It was jamming solid in the top hole in the cylinder so I ground out the top hole until it slid, as this has no role in sealing other than a seal to catch "blow by" and there is also a drain hole below.
So having done that I went to a hydraulic place as the pressure seal in the small ram was broken. it is an Oring with a shaped nylon cover which was broken. No luck with getting a new one or anything that would do the job.
I have ordered another second hand D2 jack on ebay.

I cannot recall how I bent the large ram as I didn't really lift the car. I only used the jack to push down the axle and also raise it by jacking under the leading arm on the front to help remove the spring compressor.
There was so little force involved that I used the scissor jack from my Honda Jazz to do the back.
    Ah well live and learn.
I will be very careful to make sure the jack is pushing directly upwards in future.

OK final outcome is that I have fixed it for temporary use at least. I have another on order but will take this one on my next trip if the new/old one doesn't arrive by Christmas.

I had to stack 2 orings in the inner ram slot as the hydraulic place said that there was not an oring available that was big enough in diameter ( of the rubber)to fit in the slot and protrude to give a seal. Seeing the OE setup is a small oring with a nylon shaped ring around it , I think it will be fine.

I fitted a smaller Oring with the correct diameter for the floor of the slot, then a bigger one on top that protruded. It was quite tight and needed a whack with the persuader to enter the outer ram inner cylinder.

I had to use all the original orings as all in my ALDI selection were too thick and the outer plastic cover depends on the thin OE orings ( at the base of the cylinder and top of the cylinder) to seal at the bottom into a large gasket.

I have the jack lying on it's side on my bench at the moment checking to see if it leaks, but it lifted the car enough to change a tyre.

BTW, for the poster who has a leak at the bottom of his D2 jack , you should be able to stop it just by tightening the top collar a smidgen, unless the bottom gasket is damaged.
So you can save them .
I noticed today that the jack juuust lifts my inflated tyre off at full extension, with 31 inch tyres, so I will have to be careful not to overextend it which I think started my problems.

Not only as spacers. A decent piece of sleeper is also required for ground support. Ever been jacking away only to find instead of up, the jack is making like a wombat? Not pleasant if just as you undo that last wheel nut the jack turns Titanic and sinks and the car falls off! Always good to have a solid foundation.

I have glued together two pieces of 5 ply about 25CM square with wood glue.
I reckon it will be plenty strong and fits under the back seat.
