    Duel battery options

Have been look at a duel battery system for my 2001 v8 D2.

Would like some advice on where to mount the second battery. Looked at getting a battery tray same as a TD5 to go in the engine bay by the passengers bulk head but are drug money shipped to WA. Have seen a few of members build ups with two yellow top battery's in where the factory battery is located?!

Can anyone share some wisdom on the matter would be much appreciated.

I have installed my deep cycle in one of the rear side cargo areas in my 5 seater.

Did thinking about putting one there, but do you loose any of the storage space??

Luckily mine came with the second battery tray and wiring already fitted.

However it was the smaller of the two - 7 seater with rear A/C and mine is a 5 seater with no rear A/C. The changeover price wasn't worth a few extra amps.

I bought a Full River 35Ah for the tray, now running the fridge and UHF radio.

Not the biggest but good enough to keep the fridge going overnight. Also similar sized to the Waeco Raps battery.

Hi - went for a 120AH AGM in the rear RH bin. I installed a removable shelf on top of it so you still have the top 1/3 of the bin available to put stuff.

Went this way as I wanted at least 100AH deep cycle capacity and this is difficult to do in the engine bay - not enough room with a battery tray on the firewall, and 2 yellow tops does not give you any extra AH over a 120AH standard size battery.
Other advantage of course is that in the rear bin it stays cool.

My preferred option would have been a battery under the car in the SLS compressor area or elsewhere underneah but as I have ACE and SLS there's not the room.
    Cheers

Exactly what I've done Simon, except I have my CTEK D250SS DUAL above the battery, to take solar charge from my roof mounted panel (soon to be panels). So I've committed the entire right rear bin to battery and controller.

I've cooked a few batteries in the engine bay. I have the V8 the second battery spot is just to close to the engine, one of the few times that i would like the bigger landcruiser they have a ton of space in the engine bay. I don't run a dual system at the moment but want to get one back. I'm thinking of running the second battery underneath the car, on the bracket where the compressor would sit, if i had one. I know the river crossing argument and I'm sure i can overcome that. But there is tons of space under there and i cant see it being a major problem. with only one major river crossing a year if i am lucky

Of course you can put a 130AH AGM in the first battery space and a Optima blue top in the second tray and switch the cabling so that the Optima is the cranking battery and the AGM is the second as I have done.

If it's a V8 then you can cut the wall immediately behind the battery where the TD5 ECU normally mounts, put a false floor in and two yellow tops fit in there. I'm in the midst of making a new alloy tray to better achieve the same thing. It also still fits the original jack and cover as well.

That is the best battery idea I have heard. I am just annoyed that I didn't think of it, and the fact that I just bought a new cranking battery for $220! When I could have used my optima yellow top in the second tray to crank till it died and bought a big AGM for a little bit more. My yella top is suffering from being over charged by a cheap charger, I would like to be rid of it, but it still works at reduced capacity.
