...mmm, I'll only change the filter in the morning but, if the pump is faulty/deteriorating would it fail instantly or drop of in performance over time?
BTW I have a replacement fuel filter at home (genuine part) that I can't find??!!
Rang around today and I was quoted $83 by the local AutoP? Found one from the industrial filter supplier for $24 with water seperator and all? Go figure...
It sounds like over boosting to me. I would be checking the threaded adjuster on the wastegate. Very easy to adjust. Loosen lock nut and turn the adjuster nut inside the little cage thing.
I cant remember which way it needs to go. But I think turning the top towards the engine makes it lower.
If you have replaced the turbo boost actuator. It may have a different setting. Mine I lent on the heat shield for the turbo and mine got changed.
My experience with what was thought to be a failing pump was that the vehicle wouldn't pull well under higher loads (rather than have off/on/off fuel cut-out) and that the engine failed to restart after the fuel temp sensor was removed to connect a pressure guage. The gauge showed the pump was not operating and it was thought that the pump failed right at that time. However others have reported that the engines will run without the pump running at all until the fuel supply line is interupted, after which the unit injectors are unable to draw fuel due to air in the line.
If you can hear your pump then its obviously running.
I will watch this post with interest, as I am having similar problems, with the addition of intermittent rough idling & white smoke on partial throttle takeoff & a puff of black smoke if I put the throttle down harder.
My MAF is OK, & I replaced the MAP sensor, which improved it but didn't cure it entirely.
It can't be over-boosting, as I've lengthened the waste-gate actuator rod by about 2 full turns since it started, thinking it was over-boosting...
Could also be oil in the wiring loom. Have a quick check at the ecu. Don't ask how I know.
When my fuel pump failed I thought it was the turbo waste gate controller valve. So I changed that in the bush as I had spare in the the car, but this made no difference.
I Could drive home but had no power had to drive up hills on the Calder hwy in second gear.
The next day I drove to work OK, but I only made it a k or so on the way home. The car was running like a dog, violent shakes, no power, so it was a flat bed from their.
New fuel pump fitted and running like new again.
