Thread: Heavy Duty Tie Rod

I made contact with Rock Ware Motorsport for the Offset Tie Rod for the Disco ii. I thought I'd get the heavy duty Drag Link as well.

Components: US$ 507.09
Delivery: US$ 320.00
Total: US$ 827.09

Yeah, I think Ill replace it with a heavy duty Tie Rod and find a way to protect that.

I can see why Rock Ware don't have a retailer in Australia.

But !!!

If I can get more people to piggyback of the same order we can reduce the shipping cost for each unit.

why waste your money on a heavy duty drag link, overkill,
unlikely but if you do manage to bend it it just puts the steering wheel off centre, dosen't affect the way it drives

You cant do better than just buying the cranked tie rod $170 plus $90 shipping and order some OEM tie rod ends from UK , saving about $ 4-500 on the prices you quoted

It would even be cheaper by about another %50 to get one custom made here using the ends from your original track rod,

Personally, I find the steering wheel a lot less jittery on rough tracks since fitting the heavy duty solid rods.

Your likely to cause the vehicles front wheels to toe out as well.


The Rock Ware prices are ridiculous. As I mentioned before Paddock in the UK sell and deliver a solid HD unit for significantly less (PM023 - PM023 | Heavy Duty Steering Rods for Discovery 2 - with 4 ball joints ).

Asking that exact question right now - through email.

Once the tie rod bent: It was hard to drive (like I had no power steering), and wondered all over the road. By the time I got it to a mechanic, there was another 100km before it snapped into two - It rubbed along the diff protector.

My thoughts exactly. I figured I could damage the the rods and replace them three times before the equal cost of the offset delivered.

dont confuse drag link and track rod (aka tie rod) , drag link has no bearing on toe out, just where the steering wheel sits.

I'd be hesitant about using a heavy duty straight track rod and drag link, hit it and its still going to bend but with a lot more force & be likely to break something, eg steering box

I got t-boned and the stock drag link and track rod both bent as well as the pan hard. It was enough to twist the sector shaft in the steering box plus bend the drop arm and crack the box. And that's hit by a camry from a standing start and travelled less than 10m

Hate to think what a HD one would do.
