Loud banging from D2 Td5 in rear when 4wdriving ????

Now that you said that it may have been worse when it was in raised mode. But only the left side seem to be doing it. And occasionally the right. And with my model I don't have the ACE fitted. Well hopefully whatever that noise is, isn't too serious because I'm heading back out into the bush for some 4wdriving later.

Yeh mine did it on the left side more as well. No idea why. I had the SLS adjusted so it ran higher than standard 24/7, which of course meant it was higher than intended in raised mode. This meant the shocks would clunk as they topped out when the axle dropped.

To directly answer your question, if the shockers are too short, when you are flexing the suspension the shocker might be topping out so banging at the top end of the stroke as the wheel drops to the end of it's travel. The shocks are the limiter for extension of the suspension.

I took the Disco back into Sundown National Park and did some pretty good tracks. I didn't use the rear height mode switch which raises it. I had maybe one clunk during the day from the rear. So maybe the rear shocks cant handle the extended length when in raised mode at the rear?

I was actually quite impressed with how the Disco went during the day. I've come from a modified D1 so TC was all new to me. Took me a little while to get used to it but it seems to work well so far.:)

Alien had a similar banging noise from the back of his D2. It was the spider gears in the rear diff slowly disintegrating.

A noise like that was the precursor to my rear diff going too!

By all means check everything already mentioned, esp the Watts Link bushes but a check of the diff might be a good idea too.... not good if it breaks while you're a long way from home and you don't have a CDL. At least I was able to drop the rear tail shaft and drive home in front wheel drive;)

:eek::eek: Hmmm. I've just come back from QLD. All up I did around 3,500 km round trip. If it is the rear diff I'm glad it didn't happen up there! It also just passed 300,000km on the odometer while driving there. :D:clap2:

The thing with the noise is though, it sounds like it would come from one side or the other. And it only made the noise once the next time I went out. That was without using the SLS raise button. The diff isn't noisy at all but I might just drop the oil tomorrow and check it.

When you put in the longer shocks, did you also fit spacers under the airbags to raise them also?

I had the same banging in the rear with my D2 on my first trip out. It would bang on drop offs and ruts etc with traveling a little too fast. Exacerbated by using the SLS lift. It turned out that the rear shocks were stuffed and needed replacing. New shocks and the noise disappeared.

On road the shocks appeared to be fine...

I suspect that if you replace your shocks with new ones that all will be good.

Yes it has the spacers for the air bags and the extended bracket for the height sensors as well.
