    Hi Laney
I used hose clamps a few years ago on my early D2 fuel cooler. It worked ok and did not leak and the clamps did not slip off.

Don't know if the cooler is actually needed.
    cheers

If using hose clamps, it's a good idea to use two small ones joined together as they are narrower and therefore fit better.
And yes, the fuel cooler is necessary.

Yes using a hose clamp is fine, as others have mentioned, use a thin style so it fits between the lip of housing and the notch on the plastic part.
Yes the fuel cooler is needed: the fuel that doesnt get used by the engine (most of it) gets returned to the fuel tank. The purpose of the cooler is to lower the fuel temp before it gets to the tank so the difference in temp between the tank fuel and returned fuel is reduced. Otherwise condensation would occur in the tank.
