    Rear suspension collapsing

2003 TD5 7 seater. Happened twice so far, return to car to find rear wheel up inside wheel-arch. I have then raised rear suspension for off-road, then turn-off and it returns to right level. Bit of a mechanic novice, what could this be ?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Matt.

A leaking bag or fitting would be the main culprit.

Hi Matt, You need to have quick search through SLS in "the good oil" section for all the info you need. Most likely your bags are shot.

Air loss via a fold in the airbag. When underway the leak is slow enough that the compressor easily keeps up, once you stop the system does not keep pumping air into the bags and the vehicle corner sits down. At first it will not happen every time as the bag leaks via fold and sometimes the fold must be in a slightly different spot and the fabric of the airbag closes of the hole when straightened.

I played around with a soapy water spray for a while before I had evidence that it was the bag and not a joint in the air hoses. I would now go ahead and remove the bag, stretch it out by putting air into it and then use the soapy water to find the pinhole.

make sure you are in off road mode when checking the bags on the vehicle otherwise the leak may not be visible, also be aware that if you are playing with the lines the whole weight of the rear of the vehicle will be on the system, make sure you have stands under it.

Just jack the vehicle up by the chassis. Bags extend to full length and the vehicle is supported.

Matt - if the bags are original just replace them as they will be at the end of their life at 10 years old.

They are easy to replace and not expensive ex UK. Buy Contitech (OEM) or Dunlop brands.

Matt, our D2 was started playing up just the same but at random. It wasn't a slow leak however. When ever it decided to squat it did it suddenly (within 20 - 30 secs).

It ended up being the drivers side SLS height sensor. The Nanocom helped me find the error as by chance I was looking at the sensors live output long enough I saw one drop it's value even while stationary, so the system initiates an air release to try and get both sides values in close proximity I.E "level". In my case "level" was on its bump stops

I replaced mine about a month ago, very easy job that took about 1.5hr and cost just shy of $500 including postage for the replacement airbags, which arrived within a couple of days. I needed a couple of jack stands (to put under where the trailing arms attach to the frame) and a trolley jack and the car's bottle jack (to support/raise/lower the rear axle as I swapped the airbags over).
The only tricky bit is remembering that the SLS won't work with a door open, so to reinflate the bags slightly before dropping the car back on the ground you'll have to leave the driver's side window down and reach in to start it up.
There's some very detailed, step-by-step howto guides on the electric interwebby that are helpful and speed things up a lot.
