My new drive belt just ate itself

Going through doing preventative maintenance on the Disco. Put on a new Dayco belt being sure to put the belt on so it was seated properly. Start engine and wonder what is going on in the way of noise from under the bonnet. Belt seems fine, everything turning nicely, just this noise. 5 seconds later the new belt has decided to turn itself into ribbons. Put old belt back on and all is fine. See belt in pic below. It's very easy to continue to separate it by hand.

You didn't remove one of the pulleys did you? One of the fits one way only and will chew belts due to being out of alignment.

Yes PAS pulley fitted wrong way around will cause belt to ride up over ridge

    Ive seen that before.

you either missed the installation on one of the ribs somewhere and had it run one groove out on a short ish run

or you had a belt that had failure of the "weft" fibers that hold the belt together cross ways along with some delamination of badly bonded rubber.

I'd taken a photo of the belt setup and used it to refit the new belt. Like I was saying, the belt can now be stripped quite easily by hand. I had the tensioner off to get to the lower alternator bolt. Not really a chance of misaligning it. Anyway I refitted the original with no complaints and it's been driving around fine today.

Done that. just one rib out, destroyed the brand new belt. I double check now, Bob

I'm starting to think that this might have been the problem. I'm still not happy with the ease that I can strip this belt by hand.

You were lucky, when mine went, it took out the ac belt which ripped the wires off the compressor clutch.Eventually, a new tensioner had it running true.
