Strange goings on in cooling system

Hi to all its been awhile since i last posted but i do drop in from time to time for a look i have been having a good run with the Disco until Chrissy when towing the van south on Christmas eve the radiator started to leak from the core so i put a bottle of sealer in and that slowed it to the point of about .5 of a Lt a day then the leak started again this time top hose to block a quick tighten all good until i got home than more coolant on the floor radiator now not leaking but leaking from 4 other hose fitting re tighten them no more leaks but the coolant is disappearing from expansion bottle when i release the cap to refill it you can hear air rushing in and the coolant level risers back to the full no coolant needed i have never had to take the cap off for over a year until now before the trip i flushed the system and replaced the coolant has anyone had this happen seems to be
    vacuuming in the system.

    V8 or TD5?

Sounds like Head Gasket, has it overheated?

The air noise is pressure escaping letting fluid move back into the header tank. It is classic symptom of a head gasket failure.

You don't need to have overheated the engine. A lot of Td5 engines have plastic alignment dowels which can allow the head to shift enough to cause problems.

Its a 2003 got 270k i have never had it push coolant out of the header tank that you would get with compression in the cooling system there no oil residue on the top of the coolant and i have listen closely and it sounds to be air rushing in not out the cap does,t pop off at the end of the thread you have to pull it off like its stuck there i will take it to get the coolant sniffed . thanks for your input.

At those sort of Ks I would think a head job might be in order anyway if it hasn`t had one
You can sort out things like new injector seals, stem seals and all sorts of things which will be beneficial.

I have 370, 419 km's on my D2 TD5, original head , not chipped, going well. Please, you should not generalise, If it aint broke, you don't fix it, Bob

    IMO

I would drain the coolant system back flush heater, empty header, flush block etc taking off as many pipes as possible to get the radiator leak fix crap out.
Clean and refit hoses and clips replace as necessary.
    Fit new radiator.
Modify header cap to take airline fitting fill with water then run engine to bleed then pressure test to approx 25psi.

You know you have leaking issues no point pulling head and all that cost before you get the leaks sorted.

Once you get leaks fixed and fit new cap do a couple more flushes before trying OAT as it is expensive to put into a leaking engine OAT mix will find a leak easier than just water.

IMO TD5 get damaged heads and gaskets due to overheating usually caused by low coolant levels(leaks).
    poor temperature gauge readings.
These engines are getting old now all the seals hoses pipes etc are getting past there designed life as owners/drivers we need to take more care of the signs we see leaks etc and not wait till its to late.
