    Wombat bar

The wombat bar provides minimal protection ok for standard
function but if it has to be modified (widened)to fit tow points steel bumpers
etc its not worth putting on.

Bash plate with good approach angles and good mounts much better

    IMO

I purchased the APT tow points, very happy with the product, upgraded bolts etc. but I have a nudge bar and the brackets that attach to the chassis fowls any form of shackle I try and put into it. Getting a local mob to fab something up for me.

If I didn't have the nudge bar they would be fine, just had to make some mods to the standard bumper

IMHO the problem is not with the Wombat Bar but the design of the recovery points.

It is pretty easy to see , if you look at the stock tow point , that the design of the tow point should be angled forward , however they are all straight down.
I don't know why they do this unless they have designed a "fit all" point to predominently fit D1.RRC etc and D2 is an afterthought. Or maybe to fit under a bullbar after the front bumper and wombat bar have been removed, however AFAIK all would appear to fit under bullbars if angled forward.

It would be as simple as tracing out the shape of the stock D2 point and replicating it, and then it all fits without cutting or deleting anything.

why didn't they make the brackets a different shape to fit the wombat bar ?

I had no worries fitting the APT ones with the wombat bar still fitted, only the brackets for the nudge bar fowls the holes where you attach the shackles.

That being said I had to increase the size of the holes in the crush cans to fit the upgraded bolts, and modify the standard bumper to accommodate a 4.2T shackle.

Thanks. I think i'm going to order a set as well.

Do you have a pic showing where / what had to be cut out of the standard D2 bumper?

Have fitted the APT points. Had to mount them on the inside of the chassis as they fowled the wombat bar. Bow shackles easily fit. Had to get longer bolts for the driver's side. Pics below.

had a look at the recovery brackets from APT and while looking through their site saw their steering guard protector which includes recovery points.
Anyone used these protectors but to me seems like a good idea if they are unto the task.
    Any comments appreciated
    cheers Keith

Please don't refer to them as "Wombat Bars", they will not handle a wombat hit, wombats are mobile rocks. These bars are more the "Field Mouse Bar", usually the field mouse wins though

Although my experience in the car industry is now quite old, I believe the purpose of the bars is to meet US regulation that bumpers must be at a standard height.
This is so that when having an accident the car and 4x4 meet "bumper to bumper" to absorb the impact rather than the 4x4 riding over the top of the other car and maybe over the bonnet and into the passenger area.

I believe the correct description is "anti-submaine bars" . I would be very loath to take mine off ( unless replacing with a bullbar with a lower loop at that level) as in an accident the car could then ride over the top of the other car.
