Some more information may be useful. Mainly year of car, as intercooler is bigger on the 2a model.

Biggest intercooler you can fit. Compound turbos. Remap to the most torque the gearbox can handle across the entire rev range.

Egr bypass is a good start then remove the main muffler and catalic converter if fitted.
With just the rear muffler (resonator) the noise increase very minor but the turbo spool up and power is very noticeable

EGR removal
Adjust the wastegate rod length on the standard turbo charger
Exhaust modifications - replace the flexible connection with a proper 2 1/2" size unit, replace standard units with high flow cat converter/mufflers
Larger intercooler (can start with a D2a intercooler if your vehicle is a D2 - but aftermarket units are bigger and better than both)
Turbo booster box / modified MAF as required
If automatic transmission then Ashcroft HD torque converter will not gain you any power but assist in using that which you have
Turbo upgrade - either VNT/VGT or larger unit (e.g. Alive Tuning's hybrid range) depending on what your after
Further turbo upgrade (there are some additional bigger options that aren't listed on websites and catalogs) - these will require an exhaust upgrade to 3"
Exhaust manifold upgrade - there's some replacement cast units available
Port and polish of the head perhaps?
Custom stroker or bore kit?
And of course ECU MAP tune to suit any/all the above modifications (remembering that in order to get the most out of it all, you'll want to get your MAP settings checked and adjusted as required after any further modifications)
