not much coolant at the back of the engine,,
just the dreaded head gasket leak,,
dive underneath and look for pink stains where the motor/gearbox join,,
or anywhere else![]()
Hi,
I've recently purchased a 2003 V8 Discovery 2 and currently trying to learn my way around the vehicle.
I have coolant leaking out from the end of a hose, which seems to run down and back towards the transfer case area? The hose is underneath the Heater return / inlet house. [Picture attached]
I'd be grateful if anyone can give me info on how to stop this leak. I've looked on the RAVE CD and have tried tracing the Cooling System information, but it seems that the hose it not visible on the drawing?
I'm hoping that I'm missing something easy....
Thanks...

I've had a look around and it seems to be from this pipe only. The coolant drips down the rear part (chassis) of the engine bay?
Thanks Pedro..
Can anyone else help?
Thank you
Lee
Is it coming from the hoses above the arrow. Would recommend checking the metal pipes that go to the heater core. Mabey replace hoses and hose clamps. The only place that I have had a leak is around the throttle body.
No, it's coming from the hose below. it's about 3/4 inch in diameter. I've put a screwdriver pointing to the hose. The pipe bends and runs down towards the transfer case area?
Have you actually seen coolant coming out of there?
I have that pipe too but on mine it looks like a breather of sorts.
Coolant could be coming from somewhere else.
Cheers Jerry
Hey Jerry, thanks for replying.
The hose is not that flexible and quite rigid and my initial thought was a potential breather hose, but my mechanical ID skills are a little lacking.. 😄
I've noticed it drips out of the end and runs down the side of the engine bay when the engine is running and for a period after it's been turned off. I think on one of the pics shows the coolant marks.
I topped up the coolant to cold level mark just over a week ago and today it needed more fluid. I'd say it's dropped just over half.
It's baffling me...
Good grief, breather hose? They're the heater hoses, so your cabin gets nice and toasty warm in winter from the hot fluids circulating around that great big heat engine under the bonnet. Have a competent LR mechanic look at ASAP, he might find some other potential faults too. He will have the tools to do the job safely. Hot coolant spraying in your face is unpleasant, to say the least.
I suggest you purchase a suitable workshop manual from the Shop tag at the top of the page, at least you'll be able to name the parts you're enquiring about.
What you are pointing at is the breather hose however the heater hoses (pass through the fire wall) are directly above so look at the heater hoses (basically where the handle of the screwdirver is). There appears also to be a red stain in the ignition leads.
Regards
Andrew
