    1999 TD5 Discovery won't turn off

Hey guys, picked up my discovery about a week ago... Went to shut it off today after a short drive, turned the key off but engine was still running... Pulled key out and engine kept running... Shut off by itself about 30 seconds later... Did this twice in a row... No turbo timer fitted... Is this supposed to happen? Cheers

    Definitely Not.
If I had to hazard a guess I'd say you've got leaking injector O-rings or copper washers and you're getting diesel in the oil.
Have a look at your oil level, if it's high then it's likely to be the above.
How handy on the spanners are you? There's a great tutorial on how to sort it out here...

If you're not game to do it yourself, it should be a fairly simple job for a mechanic to do.
    Cheers

    It could also be:
Turbo-charger bearing and seals leaking/spraying engine oil into inlet causing a runaway.

Or short circuiting ECU or wiring harness to injectors.

Faulty ignition switch or sticky relay

    I had this happen too.

The car had been sitting for a few months. Most disconcerting. After running it for a few times it stopped doing this. I assumed some oil had accumulated in the inlet somewhere and was keeping the motor running....

With more regular driving this behaviour has not returned.

Even simpler is the failure of the ignition module... Spray some INOX into the ignition and check that it is freely moving... Some powdered graphite may be bridging the switch even when off.

If this doesnt resolve the issue, drop the hose from the turbo to intercooler and check for excessive volumes of oil.. You may be running on engine oil through the turbo bearings which can lead to engine runaway and explosion.

Best to take a good look..

Following from this the suggestions above regarding injector seals and the like are also worthy of investigation.

How much oil in the turbo to intercooler hose is acceptable?
Is any other places oily residue can be found if your turbo is on the way out?
Can the bearings/seals in the turbo be replaced?

Sorry for revisiting an old thread but I think I'm having this very issue

How smooth was it idling after you turned off the key? If it ran normally its unlikely to be running on engine oil. I had a wire break on the ECU harness it was a green and another colour wire. With this wire broken it did exactly the same thing. From memory some of the warning lights on the dash came on after the key was turned off and engine still running. It was easily spotted while looking at the ECU harness for possible oil issues.
