    P0705

My 2001 Discovery is turning into a basket case.. Long story short while at work in Iraq, someone decided to take it for a joy ride, must had backed into something and busted the Left Rear Bumper tail light. We get home (in Mexico) to find it almost un drivable. It will start sometimes, M&S lights blinking, no windows working, turn signals not working and its not shifting out of park. When you push the pin on the shifter it will shift but way hard and only goes into limp home mode. I have replaced the Battery with the proper sized battery. Alt is working well, 13.60.. I was told to look at the XYZ switch, took it off, looks almost new.. i used the ohm meter and nothing appears open or shorted. put it all back together and put it back on. I have checked grounds, power leads etc.. with zero success.. every time i think i have it figured out, something new pops up. The new thing today is..... Code P0705 circuit A which I have no idea what that means and now for the best part... it actually started but jumped backwards when it started, no reverse lights on but it is in Reverse!!!

I am a Paramedic trying to wrench on my Dream SUV and its breaking my heart!!! LOL!!

Anyway, here is the deal... The ignition is fine, they used our keys when they took it for the joy ride so all is good there...

I have been tracking wires all day, I mean, I know what a good reading is on a multimeter and when there is a closed and open circuits but feel lost there.. Nothing is jumping out..

I actually found that the transmission was in Reverse when I crawled under to look at the XYZ switch again. I must have accidentally moved the spline but it still started.. So I disconnected sprayed contact cleaner in both plugs waited to dry and re-connected the switch... Now nothing, turn the key and nothing. the dash lights all lighting up the same, M&S and the "drive" with a line through it...

Code reader is still flaging the P0705 "A" Circuit and now P1668 which the best I can find is Anti theft, I am guessing that is the super lockdown of the tranny and engine...

I will keep looking... Maybe cracking the XYZ switch open and sraying contact cleaner and air drying for the night may do something , I dont know now!! LOL!!!

I am no mechanic but can figure most stuff out but now I am way lost!! the worst part is, we are 3 1/2 hours from the nearest LR dealer and I can only imagine the cost once we would ever get there!! LOL!! HELP!!!

Here is sort of a quick update on how lost I am and what I have tried today...

    1. I removed the XYZ switch, inspected it and re-installed it.
    2. Replaced the Battery
    3. Tightened all the Battery cables, checked grounds etc..
    4. changed out fuses
    5. Battery and Alt both have tested good. Charging at idle 13.60??? Battery is brand new and is good
    6. So I got a set of generic tail lights and socket, I jumped them into the pins and got light then it disappeared. No Lights on the bumper at all now.
    7. Tried the Ground trick and nothing.
    8. I took the XYZ out yet again and re-installed it, nothing not even turning over

So Finally this morning, I re-connect the Pos to the Battery and the damn thing started, only one problem, it is in reverse with no reverse lights or anything.. M & S lights still are on blinking but the drive with a line through it is gone...

I thought there was no way for this to be able to start in the reverse gear? I manually grabbed the spline in the gearbox and ensured it was all the way forward (what it should be in for "park") and the XYZ switch matches that position but it still is in Reverse gear...

Now it does start, engine purrs like normal but no turn signals, no hazzards, rear windows will roll up but the front windows do not. It does have head lights, the vertical tail lights are on and we do have brake lights on the back vertical tail lights but nothing on the rear bumper... Am I chasing ghosts and gremlins or am I just screwed?? LOL!! Help Please!!!

    From what I read--
re-fitting the XYZ switch is a bit trial and error,, you really need two people, one to adjust and the other to say "when!"

Is the switch in change of start-no-start in reverse??
    good question.

I am no expert on this, but you have to adjust the XYZ so that the selector on the centre console matches the display on the dash.
What does the dash say when you have the selector in Park?
If it says R for reverse you have the XYZ out of adjustemnet and have to rotate it . Maybe it is between Pand R with the inhibitor still closed but the gearbox thinking R.

Have you tried resetting the interial switch on the passenger firewall in the engine bay , Black rubber incased switch , I only say this as you say someone reversed in to something

Have you had water ingress from around the windscreen? I understand this can cause corrosion of the passenger compartment fuse box, resulting in all sorts of problems.

No water damage at all near or around the fuse boxes. Everything is corrosion free, looks nice and shinny!!

The Inertia switch has not been tripped and is in working order. Turn the key and I hear the fuel pump priming up.

The XYZ switch I think fro the RAVE is in the correct position now. Reverse lights come on at the right detent and matches the gear box spline.

Now there is a small square next to the odometer that has a diagonal line trough it and looks like a D or a B that is blinking, along with the M & S lights still.

And it is still not trying to start. turn the key and nothing. Not even a small crank, just flashing lights....

    Any Ideas????? Please!!!! LOL!!!

Given the things that are not working I would suggest hooking up a diagnostic tool such as a Nanacom to determine what fault codes are showing in the various ECU's. That is what is required to give a base line to work from.

After changing my xyz switch the car wouldn't start, just nothing when you turned the key. After a marathon process of elimination it was found to be one of the wires not properly connected into the xyz multiswitch. It had been a struggle to disconnect it before removing the xyz switch and a wire had come loose. In my case it was the input wire telling the ecu when it was in park. If the ecu does not register its in Park or N it won't let the car start.
    Could be worth checking
