As mentioned a check of all fittings etc is worth the time.
Without getting into the pros n cons of a complete flushing, I personally generally dont go for it, a high mileage auto box thats never had a service can build up a large amount of gunk, full flushing can dislodge enough of this to cause issues.

Disco lives on
Thanks for the sage advice everyone.
I took the car to Les Richmond in Reservoir (Melb) to assess whether it should be kept going or sold. One of the main determinants was the state of the auto. When they checked it is was full of metal, so a decision was made to drop in a low km used unit. They sourced one for $1700, which is substantially less than the cost of a ZF rebuild. I think if I had been looking at $4200 for the rebuild I might have been driving a new car by now. Many other smaller items have been attended: shocks, linkages, coolant leaks, oil leaks, manifold gasket, chassis fatigue, new front bar etc
I pick the vehicle up on Tuesday, and leave for the Pilbara on Friday week.
So I have given the much loved Disco a half-life refit, rather than buy a new Defender/Wrangler/VJD76. Time will tell if I have made the correct decision.

Metal particals
Metal particals from old box will still be in the system
(Pipes and cooler ) get a new cooler and get new or cleaned
pipes.
Also worthwhile to do a fluid change after a couple of days
of running.
You may dislodge some dirt from the used box and the sooner
you catch this the better.
It will have a new filter and cleaned magnets when it goes in
won't it?.
Cooler and pipes are a bit more money but could save the
cost of pulling the box out again.
