I find it interesting that there is a considered distance of about XXX Km that the head gasket could go. If this is the case, why. Is it due to head bolts streaching over time and then maybe it's worth retorqueing them at some stage.

My loose understanding - in the 'old days' head bolts had to be checked at intervals - in the 'modern day' they are often torque to yield, and all things being equal should not need checking for the life of the engine. Things become unequal when radiators block, exhaust outlets on some ports are to close and cause hot spots, plastic locators are used instead of steel, timing systems are not kept to spec etc. Happy to be corrected if this is not right.
The Thors wont do anywhere near their Classic brothers without a lot of $$$.
way too highly stressed. High compression, poor castings and running temps will kill them all eventually.
Do I blame the Germans or the yanks for this?
'00 TD5, 358k, no head or internals worked on, no oil use apart from a few minor leaks.
Just checked my 1999/2000 D2, 370,562 km's, I change the oil every 5,000 km's, oil filter/ centrifugal filter every 10,000 km's. I've changed all coolant hoses, radiator, engine mounts, starter motor, sump gasket, injector harness, have the front drive shaft greaseable, had the mod done to the leaking oil seal in the transfer case [ not a drop since] , had the exhaust manifold skimmed, dewebbed, do not use any oil, service it myself, with the help of the forum & RAVE. Not chipped, this vehicle will outlast me, Bob
2003 D2a Td5 208 kkm on the original head, no oil consumption although my mechanic tells me all Td5s supplement the oil with diesel.
My 01 td5 has done 300k with original auto and engine, only problem I had was the oil bot fell out but there was no damage to the engine 40k ago just general maintenance all done by my self
Had since new has been an amazing truck
