    Meh! just be careful! bad news, truth, and the ol messenger thingy can go awry sometimes! If u dont post for a while we will look for the freshest daisy patch! but yes as twr7cx says even unmoded warp sometimes .

    And IMHO nearly every (excluding iPom - thanks by the way- you non warped manifold people are all soooo quiet and then bam, your theory sucks buddy ) modified TD5 will warp its manifold. And YES, even some non modified TD5s will also warp . BUT it is way more likely to happen (especially if your wife puts the madman on silent because the alarm goes off when you go up the big hill on the way to Yea at 120kph with the air on going flat out and the stereo turned up) if you have modified your TD5.

    ok , lets put this one to bed....'nearly every modified TD5 will warp it's manifold'.

    is there evidence of this?

    I haven't seen it in here or the pinnacles as a major problem.

    My TD5 is not chipped, and my manifold was warped enough to hear the tell tale noise, which happened not long after I bought it. The vehicle was used to tow a caravan around Australia by the previous owner, whether that contributed to the warping, I will never know. I do know the previous owner was fastidious with his servicing & maintenance. Since grinding out the webs, and machining the manifold, there has been no problem. I used the same size studs , replacing 2 broken ones. What I have done is remove the turbo shield, and incorporated into my servicing routine a manifold nut torque check , the rear nut is always below torque, [ every 5,000 km's] most others are close. I have also installed a 'Well Tempered' temp. monitor, monitoring the engine temp. [ & transfer case], & an engine saver low water alarm. So far, so good, Bob

    So do you think the rear stud is stretching or is the nut coming loose.

    I'm not sure, It seems to be the top nut, each time. And only the rear end. I have heard that is the stud that breaks , mostly. I'm keeping an eye on it, next time I might buy a couple of new ones, take it out, & measure them up. I have a you beaut digital vernier, the only worry is Murpys' law breaking the stud getting it out. Bob

    It allows easy access to that side of the engine if you want to check things like the secret hose, exhaust manifold, oil leaks . I removed it with the intention that if it created a problem, I could easily put it back. 20,000 km's or so, no detected problems. I also removed the plastic rocker cover, and am about to remove the rear plastic cover. I removed the bonnet lining as well, some time back, [ before the turbo shield] because it was sagging , I'm going to try to source some product I can paint under the bonnet, been told it exists.     Get an EGT gauge and drive by temperature not speed or revs.

    My TD5 is chipped (TRS 1st stage) and has been for 50000kms, tows a 2 tonne van and has had no issues with the manifold but I never let the EGTs rise above 600 Degrees and I think that's playing it safe.

    I've also removed the plastic engine cover and turbo heat shield with no adverse affects ... just makes it easier to see what's going on at a glance.
