power steering pump
I have a noisy power steering pump that gets a lot noisier the longer you drive, mind you it's been that way for a long time. I'm finally going to replace it but was looking at the cheaper ones (evil bay), are they OK? anyone had any issues?? The even cheaper option is the rebuild kit, would this do the trick? anyone done this? cheers in advance.

the option to rebuild will depend on the condition of the pump when you dismantle it. If the housing is good, eg no scouring and its all in tolerances yes oki but that is something you can determine only by pulling it apart. If you intend keeping the car I would splurge on a upmarket if not genuine. at least then u know it should go the distance.
If it is noisy now be careful as they can throw in the towel at an inopportune moment! :P Steer(pun!) clear of the blue boxes!!
Cheers Scott

bought a genuine pump from trspares, twice as much as ebay, but better in the long run. Anything else I should be doing when replacing pump? what would be the best oil to use? Pretty limited to what's available here.

Yes I think for major items like pumps, Alternators and the like Genuine is probably the best in the long run. Doing other stuff depends on how long and the condition of things, like check the hoses, replace if they are orig or look dodgy, other leaks if visable, idler bearings for rough running, Alternator, Belt and just stuff in general. Better while its all apart than all together and a week down the road it dies. As for oils there is a comprehensive listings in the Good Oil thread
