If it's only in super heavy rain, I'd be checking the sealant on the top of the A pillars, dads used to do this.
That or a cracked windscreen plenum, or similar.

i had a similar problem on the driver's side footwell which seemed to originate from the aircon. I pulled the car apart trying to trace it. It turned out to be the windscreen not sealing properly (which had also cracked in the lower corners from the corrosion from a bad replacement previously).
Not sure if that helps, as it involves removing and reinstalling it to check, but that was the mechanic's first guess too.
My cash is on these, and probably the second one. In heavy rain also try turning on the recycle setting for the vents.
The D1's seemed to be worse at rubbers around the screen, and the D2 the plenum cracking - bit of black sika flex will save a lot of cash for the plenum.
