Old cars need maintenance, New cars need repayments.

My TD5 is nearly up to spec. hopefully it will be able to be driven soon!
Sick of repairs and not driving. I am looking forward to using it soon.

    I'm in the same boat.

Bought at 170,000 kms 4 years ago.

Pretty much faultless until the head went 18 months ago. 5 grand

Then the front drive shaft went = new Bellhousing. Did myself, got out of it for around $1200 with housing, new shaft, oil lines etc

Other stuff since I got it.
    Fuel pump
    Fuel Pressure Regulator
    Glow Plugs
    txfer case leak
    fuel lines
    oil pump bolt
    silicon hoses
    Pwr steering hose on rad
    Engine mounts
    Donut

Some I did myself, some not. Probably spent around $10K on it (including the head and other stuff.

and addons to set up for touring.

    Voyager Roof Rack
    Billstien shocks all around
    Firestone Air bags (in coils)
    ARB Bar
    Dual Battery
    Fridge slide
    Cargo barrier
    = $4.5 grand here.

OUCH.... No wonder the financial controller doesn't like it. But I explain that the interest on the load of double that price for a cruiser (that would have been older and , plus the extra fuel burn of that there's not much in it.

Now at 230k. It's in very good condition inside and very clean engine and doesn't leak a drop of oil.

Hopefully another 200k out of it :-) although at the rate the kids are growing up, we might need something bigger before it wears out.

    Hmmm...

    Purchase price $12000

    Accessories $6370

    Previous maintenance $1837

My maintenance, not including general service costs $2750

Rough total for what I'd love to do? Probably not going to get change from $12k or $13k.

Realistically what it will cost me to get it to a point that I'm satisfied with?
    $4k with change.

    No-one said it's a cheap hobby

Similar story, got my 99 about 4 years ago with 160k km, now at 210.
When the heads went last year I almost flipped and bought a GU off a mate. Didn't though, there's no way I can part with the bloody thing.

Just had to replace the FR ACE assy and new shockies - they were the originals!

Clutch at some point in the future and from reading on here the front drive shaft as a precaution.
Bent the steering rods, smashed the rear bumper, intermittent 3 amigos etc etc

Lucky the Minister is patient although her Toureg is about to go in for a service and I reckon it's gonna be nasty! I wouldn't go near that thing with anything short of a computer science degree..

When some times talking to friends the cost of their last car service/repair comes up. Because I do all the repairs and maintenance on the family cars, when the Disco needs a few bob spent on it, the minister for finance is fairly understanding as she knows how much is saved by me doing it.

And touch wood, I have had a good run with mine. In close to two years the only problems have been three amigos with option B fixing this, total cost a litre of brake fluid and a turbo boost modulator, cost $45.

I have spent on maintenance, a Tom Woods front tail shaft $500 and apart from servicing that's it.

$1000 for a lift kit $1800 for a bull bar, $1500 for a roof rack, $500 for fyrlyts but these are accessory's not a repair.

Next week 5 new tyres $1500

I hope the minister does not see this post because if she adds it all up she might lose some of her understanding
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Hopefully I have done the general maintenance stuff (other than front ball joints, they will wait for time being). Time to drive!

    Broken stuff
    Full set of radiator hoses.
    Water Pump
    Serpentine/Fan Belt
    Oil cooler
    front drive shaft

    Additional stuff
    Rear Bar
    CB Radio
    CD/bluetooth radio
    Exhaust temperature sender/gauge

we will just wait and see what brakes/stops next.
