Put an AMC head on it and it will be good for yonks, 190k seems a bit premature to give up on it.
Hi, I had water being pushed out of the overflow bottle so decided to pull the head off thinking it was a head gasket failure. Attached are photos of head showing crack running from water gallery towards each cylinder. Block shows signs of water in cylinder. I'm thinking that it is now time for the old girl to be put out to pasture. Has been really good up to now. Done quite a lot of maintenance only done 190k but had enough now. Looking for someone who might want to come and pick it up.![]()
Thanks Disco Muppet but minister for finance says no more so I've just listed it on Ebay. If it had of been just the gasket I would have kept going. I already spent $700 getting it shipped up to our new home in Tannum Sands. Your right it will be a good rig with a new head and hopefully someone will get her to the 300k mark.
That's a bit unpleasant. sorry to hear it.
Has it ever been overheated?
Interested, because I am at 320k km and have air in the heater matrix. (gurgling noises)

I will probably show my ignorance here , but are you sure that those are cracks and not casting marks?
The reasons I say that is
1 They do not appear to be inside the gasket pressure ring.
2 to have 4 identical cracks is an amazing coincidence.
3 have you used flourescing material on them and do they show cracks inside the water galleries?
My impression is that TD5 heads crack in the injector valleys and I have never read of them appearing like your head. ( but you learn something new every day LOL)
I suggest you have it assessed by a head expert.

Hi, It did overheat once when the top radiator hose got a small crack in it from rubbing on the a/c pipes. Going up the Toowoomba range. I thought I stopped soon enough but maybe not. Patched it up with a bit of duck tape and got back out to chinchilla and back to the gold coast. My engine had plastic dowels and I think the head must have moved around a bit.
Hi Bud
If your head still had the plastic dowels in it.
It would more than likely be just a head gasket which is quite common problem.
I would take it to a engine reconditioner and have him check it over and perhaps get it faced then put it back on with new steel dowels and gasket.
Just pulled the head off my wife's D2 at 302,000 k's which still had the plastic dowels in because it was pressurising the header tank.
Had the head faced with new steel dowels and head gasket and all is good.
Cheers
Steve
Given a pic can not fully convey what an in the flesh look can I would still tend to agree with Phillip and Steve that it is only the dowels allowed movement of the head. 190 its still a pup!.
On the subject of the plastic dowels, they were only ever to locate the head on assembly, never to provide long term location, The torque of the head bolts is for that. How many other motors have dowels to stop the head moving? It is just unfortunate that the alloy head on cast block allows movement via diff expansion rates.
Cheers Scott
Yes I saw it on eBay and if it wasn't in QLD I would buy it..
I agree get it checked properly and maybe not a big fix.
Not bad enough to waste your current investment.. They are a great vehicle..
