I had a similar noise on my 110.
Turned out to be the engine lifting points had come loose and were rattling.
Cheap fix Haha.

HOwdy folks, i have been trying to suss this one myself, with the help of google and forum searching. so far one thing that sounded similar was a thread where the noise was described as a lot like the one i am experiencing and it turned out to be the centre silencer. (which i am not fully sure what this is, is it similar to a catalyct converter or muffler and has baffle things inside which could be broken?)
i thought it sounded like a dry turbo, which prompted me to look around and find the vac hose broken. so put that back on. said noise stopped, but has since returned. it sounds sort of a metally rattle, or like wind going through a tiny hole. it stopped again yesterday, only to then start again the next time the disco was driven. it is better heard from the drivers side, is harder to hear from the passengers. and it only does it in the rev range of 2500=2800rpm and not when the car is stationary. it has to be in motion. im going to go out there and look underneath properly today, as there is a strange noise that sounds like ive got a trapped and dying plastic bag under there jsut at idle. so im guessing the two are connected. there is an oil leak on the turbo return hose where the gasket is meant to be. i am ordering a new MAF sensor this week as mine is not well, as well as a new top hose as mine has started leakign coolant out of every end of the top hose so think its past its use by date LOL! this weird noise started on the way back from melbourne when my friend and i picked up her new horse float.
it is doing my head in as i dont want my car to die on me. i love the thing and need it. i figure out most things but this one has me stumped!
oh, also has anyone else got a weird thing where the 3 amigos come on sometimes when towing? i do not have the 3 amigo problem, but now and then when there is a trailer on, they all come on. normally jsut go away on its own but it is rather strange. LOL!
thankyou in advance AULRO forumites![]()

I know what you mean with noisesOKi I have had a couple of similar 1s lately and they were A, the heat shield for the central muffler, The heat shield had cracked around a mounting bolt and was vibrating, fix was an extra large washer!
B, the handbrake shoes, I discovered if when I heard it and applied the handbrake lightly,(NOOO , not a handbrakie!
) it stopped. This 1 I have not got to yet but some say its a spring issue.
when you say vacuum pipe, is that the 1 to/from the modulator? or the brake vacuum 1?
Cheers Scott
hopefully mine is something similar and not too major LOL.currently disco down as in looking around i discovered the hose from the expansion tank to the fuel cooler had a hole in it :O must have rubbed through driving it yesterday.
i think it is the vacuum hose? its a tiny little pipe that goes to the front of the turbo, and kind of bends down near the MAF. it had broken at what it attaches to down there. heaps of oil LOL and my oil leak died right off without that attached :O oil leak is the gasket on the turbo return line. or oil return line, cant think what it is called.
i will test if hand brake application makes the noise go away tomorrow if i manage to find a new hose!
Well the LR fix is stronger springs but the problem is wear on the backplate and shoes from vibration. I fixed it by welding up the backplate wear indentations and fitting new shoes. There is no way I could have depressed the stronger springs to fit them after that.
This 1 I have not got to yet but some say its a spring issue.
You could do it before fixing the shoes and backplate, but IMHO a bandaid solution.
I posted a photo a couple of months ago and someone else posted some over a year ago.
I bought a set of heavy springs form UK just in case.
Regards Philip A
Yes , That tiny little pipe is attached to the turbo wastegate modulator
AHA, Philip, I remember now about your posts. That is what I was thinking of, well it was springs in the mix somewhere!Im a little nonplussed about mine as there was no noise whatsoever b4 I got the auto done and now this has appeared after. My thinking was a misfitted spring retainer on the shoes.
if i get the new expansion tank to fuel cooler pipe today, ill be taking it to one of my mates this weekend who has a defender and has got it leak free, and been through all sorts of weird noises so he might have heard this one before![]()
still at a loss as to what this noise isit does not do it with the car stationary. Is louder when underload (towing) but still confined to same rev range. no noticable power loss etc. have not taken it to my mate to have a listen yet. is louder from drivers side yet can still hear from passengers.
its not the dreaded cardon joint? They do emit odd noises at varing evs sometimes on their way out.
Cheers Scott
I dont know how to tell if it is that. aside from movie style hang under it whilst car is driving lol!
