    TD5 Strange temperature readings

    Hello,
Having a funny problem, while driving the temperature sits anywhere between
88 C Highway up hills goes a little higher and about 90 ish 92 C around town but when at a stand still it heats up very quickly within 5 minutes it is up to 98 C. I am thinking the thermostat is not opening only the bypass is working. hopefully not the head gasket. Any ideas ?? not using any water
    thanks

Thermo fan not working? Is the air conditioning fan coming on to help cool it down?

it may not be a problem, most cars get hotter at idle. does it cool down again when moving over 60 k's 'does the temp continued to rise when going slow ?
I would also check the fan to see if it is pulling air through the radiator,

X2 My GTV6 does exactly the same. Slow traffic or stopped at the lights temp always increases until elec fans kick in and it drops back again.

Also saw some graphs recently on a jaguar web site where a guy monitoring engine temps on an XJS V12 showed the same pattern.

    Cheers

    Hello,
May thanks for the replies have the air-con running the temp goes up and stays there, when driving it does drop quite quickly. After I replaced the head gasket it wouldn't get much above 93 C it has a new radiator, the gauge on the dash doesn't move the readings i am getting are from my evo.

I would check your viscous fan is working properly
also next time leave the revs up on the engine when stoped like 1500 rpm and see if it changes if it don't then at idle the fan is not spinning fast enough to draw enough air through the radiator to effectively cool the engine after its been working.
also the water pump speed has dropped and so the water is passing slower in the engine allowing it to get hotter.

but this is why its advisable if you have been working the engine real hard to not just pull up and shut off as the engine will boil its self even if the temp is ok at shut down

    Hello,
Yes changed the fan this morning will try again today yes it good to try to let it cool down a bit mine is a auto so a little hard to keep the rev's up at the lights...My thoughts were the bypass at the thermostat will try the fan today and next is the thermostat.
    Thanks
