    Air suspension troubles?

My grandad's discovery has been having the three amigos appearing every few days for the past 2 months since the front hubs have been replaced. After that, it was taken in to an expert who diagnosed the front right ABS sensor module to be failing. The 3 amigos disappeared after that was replaced but only for about 10km.

he took it into an expert to get it fixed and the mechanic said that the rear air bags weren't inflating even though they were operating just fine when he drove it in. He suggested the compressor was at fault so we had springs fitted in the mean time. The 3 amigos were still there until the ABS modulator was unplugged and plugged back in. The three amigos have been mostly gone since then except the traction control and hill decent lights still appear when you first turn the car on until you turn it off and back on again.

Today we took the compressor out to see if we could test it and it was able to pump up one of the old air bags pretty firm before we stopped it because we don't want the bag to explode. We decided to check the air filter behind the left tail light and the top sponge was really crumbly. The bottom sponge was all compressed down into a small disk. We checked the air lines which are full of sponge debris all the way down into the compressor.

There is a large cylinder with 2 tubes going through it between the air compressor and the air filter, is this another filter? Does it need cleaning out? And is there and easy way to check if the compressor is good?

    Amigos

Get the car on a diagnostic computer to see what fault codes
you are getting before fitting parts

    Silencer

RAVE indicates that it is a silencer. See below.

If the compressor works - it's good. You can disassemble it to check ring etc, but I wouldn't go to this extent, as it is running with power.

    Air intake filter
The air intake filter is located in the left hand 'E' post, behind the tail lamp assembly. The filter comprises a plastic moulded housing which contains two filters of differing density to remove particulate matter from the air drawn in by the compressor. The air intake filter has a pipe which is connected to the SLS air harness by a quick release
connector. The air intake filter must be replaced as an assembly.

    Air intake/Exhaust silencer
The air intake/exhaust silencer is located on the outside of the left hand chassis longitudinal, behind the air supply unit. The silencer is an integral part of the SLS air harness and cannot be serviced individually.
The intake and exhaust air to and from the compressor passes through the silencer. The plastic moulded silencer has two chambers. One chamber reduces system exhaust noise and the other dampens intake air pulses produced by the compressor.

The mechanic said something like "Compressor: Excessive Duty Cycle". We removed the filter container and the top filter had disintegrated and seems to have blocked the filter below it and also filled the pipes to the compressor with the debris.

The car will be taken back to the mechanic this week to get a new air filter and we will see if that fixes the problem.

I think that will be the air dryer, it takes moisture from the air when sucking (inflating) and when blowing (deflating) will remove any moisture back out of the dryer.

The air filter unit is behind the brake light cluster and is only a $30 ish part and can easily be changed in 5 mins after removing the light cluster.

sound like once the old broken down filter is blown out it should work fine, time it, it should take about 20-30 second to pump fully to 'extended mode'

Air dryer is in the compressor box (cylinder above motor); silencer is visible and next to chassis. Look at the manual folks or this forum on refurbishing the compressor. Or pull things apart and silica everywhere if you aren't careful.

Compressor: Excessive Duty Cycle""usually means that the compresser has run for to long and the overheat safety has shut it down. This could mean that there is an air leak somewere or the compressor is stuffed and cant pump air to lift the vehicle thus the overheat.

We went back to the land rover expert mechanic today who could only tell us the compressor had a fault code of "excessive duty cycle".

We have decided to buy fittings and a gauge which will give us the pressure that the compressor is putting out; replace the compressor air filter; Purchase a new piston ring if the compressor does not meet the standard. Once standard air pressure is achieved we will re-install the air bags, turn the compressor back on and test if the compressor will inflate and raise the car.

We would like to thank all the people who have helped us so far and will post updates about our situation in the near future.

    Hey mate,

The air tube that fits in the air bags is 4mm. You can buy it from places like Enzed. you can also buy Shrader valves and push in connectors. A Shrader valve is the same as a car tyre valve. Do a search on my posts and you'll find pictures of what I'm talking about.

To start getting things back up and running on the air bags. You can make up a tube with a Schrader valve on the end. Then you can pump up the bags with a standard tyre pump.

Just be aware that I found removing or adding weight to the air bags seems to make a bigger difference to the height than the same weight does to coil springs. So if you pump up the bags, measure the height and think you have it right, when you fuel it, it will drop and by empty it will raise quite a bit.

I have rebuilt the system and used an aftermarket pump under the bonnet so I have a fair idea how the system works but I still have a few things to learn about it yet.

When you search my posts, you'll also find a picture of the muffler you were talking about earlier. I cut mine up because someone else asked what it was. It's by no means noisy without it but you do hear it adjust. I think it's kind of cool (I don't know what that says about me).

Flick me a PM of you want my phone number. I'm for you to call to ask anything.

    Happy Days.
