Does the intertia sensor switch thingo on the fire wall get tripped at all when this occurs?
Hello All,
Important info first, its a 1999 TD5 Auto with ACE. EGR removed, Airbags removed and replaced with coils. Everything else is standard.
Now the problem.
Every once in a while (almost once every 2-3 days) the car will crank happily when the key is turned but the engine won't start. I've had the problem for more than a year now. This used to happen once a month earlier but now has started occurring a lot more frequently.
After a lot of narrowing down, I have found a fuse in the under-bonnet fusebox that I can remove and put right back in. This makes one of the relays in there click and then I can start the car right away.
I have attached a picture with the fuse and relay circled in red. I am not able to figure out what they are for as the info on the fuse cover tells me to refer to the owner's manual which has no more information on it.
I am thinking its a case of either faulty fuse box or a loose earth somewhere that is not allowing the relay to close/open as it should when the engine is turned off.
Can someone tell me where to start checking ?
Cheers,
lavingia

Well according to RAVE that Fusible link , F5 (50A) , Connects to fuse 34 in the passenger compartment fuse box which is the BCU (body controle Unit ) The relay ,R9, is listed as Main relay . Removing and replacing will probly make it click.
I think a fair starting point is replace that relay and see. Relays are a wearing item and being the main gets a lot of use.\
The next line is maybe a solder joint cracked or dry.

A high percentage of Land Rover electrical faults are caused by poor EARTH connections, plus the usual broken and faulty plugs/sockets.
The Fuse box is a known hotbed of these!!!
Wriggle, remove/replace, check, curse and swear at everything in there... especially the relay(s)
Sorry I forgot to mention this earlier, I have replaced both, the relay and the fuse.
Will check on the fuse in the passenger compartment as well today evening once I get home.
Not that I can tell. Anything specific I need to check for the inertia switch ?
OKnew bits, very good, Thats out of the equation. Removing , replacing items in the fuse box seems to be the key, so to me that maybe points to a dry/cracked solder joint in the fuse box. The act of removing/ wriggling/ disturbing the connection is causing it to function, after running vibrations/ settling reverts to open circuit maybe.
These problems can be very hard to diagnose easily so be patient.

3 bolts hold the engine bay box in. Have never removed 1 so not sure. Start off by disconnecting battery though as its a little early for Guy Fawkes! Then I assume just disconnect wiring until you can lift it out? Sorry not a lot of help but RAVE says much the same, which really you need to have on hand if you want to chase gremlins like this.
Cheers Scott
Does this happen when cold starting?
My td5 will not start unless I wait for glow plug pre-heat light to iluminate then go out. Even hot sometimes...
Check FL2 fuse and relay R6 maybe
Regards
