The V7
My V8 Disco has broken down in Newcastle.
It dropped a cylinder with a miss and a loud tapping noise similar to a very loud lifter rattle. I would describe it as border line between a Tap and a High pitched Clunk!!
I was pushing up the hills on the M1 and got it up to 5K when it went. I do that all the time.
Mechs have ripped tappet cover off and said briefly it looks like a bent rocker gear. That the shaft has lifted out of the casing.
Thats good news on one hand but should I get them to look further?
Would a gear on a shaft just lift out?
Advice i have from a second opinion says YES. Alloy head, steal bolts, age, hard work etc could cause that to just happen.
It has always had a tappet tick, maybe this has been the harbinger of doom, forecasting the problem.
Any thoughts on what might cause a Rocker Gear to lift up out of the casing?
I'm going to have to wait till Monday to call again. One would assume they would look for a deeper cause!
I need to drive it home to Brisbane too so no more problems please.
Cheers
Ian.

Some pictures might help but from your description it sounds to me that the rocker shaft has come away from the cylinder head, the link below shows how the valve train is set up on a rover V8.
www.v8engines.com/Rockers_cust.html
for the rocker shaft to come away from the cylinder head it probably means that the the thread in the cylinder has failed and this generally means either a replacement cylinder head or a repair of the thread will be required.
For the thread to fail something bad had happened. Incorrect fitment of the bolt during installation, ie cross threaded or over torqued, can cause a thread to fail. If the engine was machined during a rebuild then the tappet pre-load may not have been correctly set, the link below shows one way of checking the tappet pre load( about 1/4 of the way down the page).
RPi Engineering - V8 Engines
Given that something abnormal has happened to the valve train of the engine it may pay to check the condition of the camshaft/lifters/rockers/rocker shaft/valves for wear and damage. Some of the more learned people on the site may provide other theories or recommendations.
Cheers

Hi Boony
Thanks for taking the time and effort for your reply which was spot on.
Mechs have pretty much agreed with your prognosis.
Car getting new rocker shaft, lifters, coils, leads, water pump, etc and will be retrieving it later in the week.
Thanks again
Ian.
