Unhappy crunch/clunk uh oh!!! whats happened now

Hi all hope we are doing better then I am

I have a 03 td5 auto disco that has 218000kms and was driving home yesterday when I got to the lights
I slowed down and as I came to to stop heard a noise...a bad one but was hoping that it was the truck next to me.

As I went to take off I realised the crunch/clunk came from me
the car only travelled between 25-40kph and just kept reving out and down and just nothing well very minimal power was going to the wheels.
Limped it back to mates place just round the corner thankfully and checked out underneath and all oils no leaks no nothing that I could see. Let it rest took for a spin round block and same thing.

Bit stumped and highly worried. Mechanic says can be anything from manifold to full gearbox rebuild price wise $400-$5000.
just seeing if anyone expierence this or knows what it could be
    thanks for any help
    cheers

Pretty sure it say its a 03 td5 auto disco with 218000kms in the second paragraph

Its not making any noises... I manually went from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to Drive it changes into place with out noise but theres no power going to wheels.
also went threw the high and low and diff locks no noise while changing or difficulty

just as I drive she revs up to 4000rpm and then back to 2500rpm but only stays between 25-40kph range

sorry i should learn to read,
I would get someone to check the tranny oil level first,If you undo the fill plug a little bit, there should be oil coming out the fill hole with the engine stopped. If the oil is there have a smell of the oil to see if it smells burnt you may not be able to tell the differance it is an aquired taste.

check the oil, if its full of black and shiney stuff youve cooked the TC if you're lucky the primary clutch pack if your not.

if its low on oil.. a flush and refill might just get you out of trouble.

Does sound like something bad has gone wrong in the tranny or transfer case. When I first started reading and you described the clunk first thoughts was your front driveshaft let go.

crunch clunk isn't usually associated with low oil,Although perhaps driveline backlash?.what happens when the handbrake is applied.

Handbrake dragging badly? This will have that effect, although usually you can smell it.

Does it take off in first, then go ok if you change up to D once you're over around 30ks?

I'd say you've done the one way clutch in the auto. Only solution. Rebuild or replace. Best bet, a 4hp24 unit with a medium TC from ashcrofts. By the time you add up a rebuild here you're up for the same dollars and you'll get a better box from them.

Trust me, just did it before Christmas. Only bonus was insurance paid for it.
