    Squeaky V8!

    Gday,
    My 2004 V8 Disco is making a squeak! I think its coming from one of the belt driven accessories bolted onto the front of the donk, but which one is most likely? Car is coils all round -so no ACE, theres plenty of fluid in the power steering resevoir, so I dont think its the pump running dry. It could be the belt but it sounds more like a bearing me.
    What do you lot think? I know these V8s arent known for their roar, but I wont put up with it squeaking!

    G'day... suggest you remove the serpentine belt and idle the engine from cold for about 30 secs-1 minute to hear whether the squeak is present. If it is, then it's not any of the pulleys/pumps/alternator etc.

    Switch off engine and feel for any lateral movement in the idler pulleys. Check also to ensure the bolt holding them in place is properly torqued to 50nM (37 ft lb-they can come loose and so will not run "true". This is one cause of the "squeak".

    OK, so I can do this without any ill effects? I guess the only things critical are the water pump and alternator and they should be right for 1 minute or less.

    Belt off test

    Belt off test is safe to do for a few mins it will eliminate
    the pulleys when running and let you test wiggle pull
    and spin to check for movement resistance and noise
    by hand and ear with engine off.

    Success! I removed the serpentine belt and ran the engine, no squeaks present. All the pulleys seemed to spin freely and smoothly except for the idler pulley located just underneath the belt tensioner, which spun freely but rough and made a tiny ringing noise when I spun it. Anyway off it came and down to the bearing service I went, $12 on a new bearing and put it all back together and now shes quiet as a mouse.
