    Td5 - Automatic Gearbox Questions - Revving/Leaking

    Hi

I have some questions about my TD5 Automatic

It always seems to have a small leak and I cannot trace where it comes from, I can see it as ATF oil blowing back along the bottom of the case, and I can sometimes smell it when I am in the cabin. Any obvious places to look? I recently replaced the seal between the Handbrake Cylinder and the case, so doubt it is there. My TD5 has 356000km and the gearbox was rebuilt at about 150000km.

Does anyone have a chart that indicates Revs/Speed as I recently changed the ATF fluid and now it seems to be revving higher at 100km/h than I remember(could be my imagination) but it would be interesting if a chart existed that indicated revs at gearchanges or average revs on a flat at 60km/hr, 80km/hr and 100km/hr

    Stall Test - Torque COnverter

OK, I have done some further research and discovered the Stall Test here on the site.

Stall Test Results: app 2900 revs for TD5 which suggest I have a Torque Converter problem.

Further symptoms happened today - feels like it is sometimes in Neutral and if I rev it up to about 2000 for a few seconds it kicks into gear - so to my limited understanding it sounds again like a Torque Converter issue.

    Some more questions
    Anyone had this before?
Any idea what it will cost me - as this is beyond my skill set?

Yes that does sound very much like either a TC problem or a pump problem. I had very similar symptoms and had to get it rebuilt. Cost does seem to vary so shop around. A very good alternative is and Ashcroft unit although they are a little expensive getting them over here Ashcroft Transmissions
do a search on here re ashcroft and read up. Do not leave it until it stops, that will cause more problems dont ask how I know!

low oil level and a leaking pump seal.

check the oil in the pan odds are its full of black clutch material which means the TC lockup clutch is dying.

It didn't stop BUT it has just been stripped and apparently the TC was totally wrecked, metal housing destroyed, metal through the pump! Very Expensive

But by Monday I will have a smooth gearbox that should last another 150000kms

If you have metal floating about renew the cooler and the pipes. The blasted thing pumps all the fine metal particles up into the oil cooler and then dribbles them slowly back into your brand new, u buty, just rebuilt at great cost to the management, gearbox thereby ensuring another rebuild 12-18 months down the track!
The upside being that you get to renew that pesky cooler pipe that rustproofs the underside every so often
