RRC to Disco 2a
I'm seriously considering purchasing this car:
2002 Land Rover Discovery Td5 03MY
I need someone to tell me what is wrong with D2a's and why it is a bad idea to buy this car.

hmmm
Use the good oil for all of the hints and tips and what can wrong with D2s. I moved from an RRC to a D2a TD5 auto with self leveling rear suspension. Completely different style of car; can't really compare the two. If you get one, change the steering stops so you have a good turning circle. With an ecu remap goes as hard as the RRC, if required. But, it has at least an 800km range and if the fuel light comes on, it doesn't flame out about 10km later.
Btw: 2002 (non upgrade / non D2a) doesn't have a cdl lever in the cabin.
Throttle and other behaviour changes occur in D2 from high to low range as its throttle by wire, one of the benefits of having electronic components.

I did notice was 2002. But why does it have the later model headlights do you think? Thanks for your reply.

Those headlights came out at the end of 2002

Correction - pre upgrade (ie no pocketed lights) has a lever for hi/low, but can't use it to engage cdl. Pre upgrade has reverse lights on back pillars; upgrade has them on bumper bar.

Hi All
If it's a 2002 update it will have the CDL as Land Rover started fitting it again to this model.

It looks pretty good to me. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy it because of this but WOW that roof rack is high. That's the reason why I built my own.
Ask if it has ACE too. It's pretty good.

It looks ok to me and I've looked at a few in the last couple of months and recently bought a very standard 2003 Td5 Auto for about that price. If it's 2002 and pre-update, it won't have cdl and that means the transfer case won't have the innards (ie; it’s not simply disconnected).
When I was looking, there seemed to be a significant correlation between how smart and honest the current owner was and how good the car turned out to be. Eventually, I stopped going to far-flung suburbs to look at cars with huge tyres, owned by young blokes who had "all the gear but no idea". Often too much fruit was an indicator of shoddy workmanship and little attention to the basics (such as regular servicing).
There are plenty of update D2a Td5's which seem to have been owned by middle-class family types who have serviced them regularly and never been off road. They are available in the same price bracket as this one but usually without fat tyres and lift kits.
So, and this is strictly from my perspective, if you are looking for reasons not to buy it, you'd have to:
• Take a close look at the service history.
• Be certain that it's not being sold because something terrible has just happened, or is about to happen.
• Make sure that the owner, who can’t spell, can at least read well enough to have followed the instructions when fitting those extras.
• Satisfy yourself that the cost of the extras (most of which are available 2nd hand from wreckers – it’s a 12 year-old car, after all) justify the risk inherent in buying a modified vehicle.
Enjoy, and let us know how you go.
