    Td5 Timing

    hi all,

    I need to have my cyl head sorted, few probs ie broken stud, leaking gasket and over 200***kms. I am confident of removing and refitting the head but not sure of the timing. It is (or is it) possible to remove the head have it reconditioned by an expert and reinstall without affecting the timing. I want to also deweb the manifold and drill out the outer holes as suggested by others.
    I have read there are other special tools to lock the timing which i don't have.

    finally i understand you need to replace all 12 head securing bolts for new, is this really necessary? How is it possible for the plastic dowels (guessing i have them) able to move given you have the 12 bolts securing the head or is it the heat and cooling expansion that moves the dowels. will fit steel dowels.

    last question, i cannot purchase the head kit as the gasket comes in 1,2, 3 hole and not sure what i have till i pull apart? is this correct. thx

    In regards to the head studs, I'm guessing they are torque to yield bolts. Which means once correctly torqued they 'stretch', so you cannot re use them.
    I'm still learning land rovers, so I can't help with much else at the moment! But with the head gasket you will need to confirm thickness before purchasing the kit

    You'll find the thickness of the gasket by looking at a bit of it that sticks out from the head, I think on the front left? It has 1, 2 or 3 holes in the bit that sticks out. Only a few millimetres wide by 20mm long, I think.

    the head gasket has holes drilled in it to represent the thickness, just replace it with the thickest one.

    YES you must replace the td5 head bolts once you have had them torqued up all the way. (they make great pegs and drifts second hand)

    the timing tools can be improvised, Drill bits usually work best but you can also eyeball it up if you have friends to help you.

    The trick is to grab the RAVE CD and read up on that then look at the pretty pictures.

    when you work out how the tool does what its suppsoed to do and what shape it is you can usually knock something together.
