It sounds as though the starter motor is not engaging. I only say that because the motor doesn't even turn over when you turn the ignition on.
This one's a little hard to explain so I thought it would be easier with a video.
Seems to happen only in the morning or in the evening if the car hasn't been driven during the day (ie when the car is cold)
Ideas..?

My thoughts were somewhere along that line, but after 5-6 goes it'll kick over..
Starter solenoid, easy fix once it is out
When I had the solenoid fail, it would click, rather than turn the starter motor and not engage. I'd suggest from the sound that the pinion is not engaging to the flywheel and either the shaft needs needs cleaning or the power terminal is not tight and not allowing the pinion to engage due to voltage drop. Something along those lines as a starting point....
It's caught Toyota Prado disease....
Had it happen to a Prado we went with to Birdsville with and is common problem with them..
Sprag clutch in the starter motor..
I think a Prado uses the same Nippondenso starter!Depending on the model and motor. Trust Toymotor to copy!
And yes more than likely the contacts in the solenoid.
Cheers Scott
Roger that, will rip out the solenoid and clean it up.
Cheers for the pointers![]()
