Should crank angle sensors be replaced as a service item?

When mine went last year (D2 V8), we'd just done a 600km mostly highway drive back to Brisbane. No issues, nothing noticed and i usually take note if something seems slightly off. Left it for two days. Then starting up it didnt seem quite right. Next day same again, driven about 5km pulling into a (busy) driveway and it died outright. It had done about 142k km at the time. No idea whether it had been changed before or not. Would consider changing again, to pre empt another debarcle but it wasnt cheap. Think it was about $150 for the part an same for fitting. But could be worth changing, just have to decide when...? 200k km ?

When replacing on a Td5 Rave mentioned a spacer if fitted. Does a new part come with the spacer and will I have to remove the original unit to find out if I need same.

My new 'Intermod' one didn't come with the spacer, but I fitted it anyway. No issues for me, but as RAVE said it need one I got one (NSJ000010) and fitted it. Only difference it seems to take a split second longer to catch when starting, but maybe that's just me...

Edit: I didn't have a spacer fitted when I removed the original(?) sensor.

I drove a British Offroad loaner V8 with about 220k on the clock and it failed in my car park under a building...15 min job for the guys when they drove down. I called it as CPS and they brought a new one and a fuel pump just in case.

The symptoms displayed when the CPS failed - D2 V8, around 200K km, initially when cold failed to start, then after being towed home approx 30 km started and ran fine. After would stall at intermittent intervals, always in the most inconvenient location. Generally restarted readily after a 10 - 15 minute wait.

Initially suspected a failed/ failing relay or failed fuse.

I eventually picked up a replacement new CPS. Typically LR make it unnecessarily difficult to remove & refit.

Suspect failure may be due to moisture ingress, as there are no moving parts. It simply picks up an electronic impulse as a toothed wheel passes the probe.

Just replace mine, failed to start on the driveway (lucky), RAA pretty much diagnosed it and the next day Peter at PCB Land Rover fitted a new one. I thought the $125 plus fitting (less than 1 hr) was very cheap.

This has been the second CPS (aka crank angle sensor), the first was before my ownership. I reckon its an eight year and fit new cycle. Cars done 260k.

I tried looking up crank position sensor in RAVE and could not find it - can anyone give me pointers as to where to find it?

Yes - look under Engine Management System > Repairs > Sensor Crankshaft Position (CKP) !
