Using Rear foglight switch as lightbar switch

    Hi guys,
    Installed a lightbar today
I also managed to grab a spare rear foglight switch aswell from Alex when I grabbed the Bullbar.
Seeing as it's a top left corner switch(standalone rear fog-no factory front fogs option)it also fits as the bottom right switch(below cruise control) without modification which is where I'll be using it.

I know the rear foglight switch isn't a latching mechanism,
    But it's still a push-on-push-off switch isn't it?
Ie, my factory rear foglight switch doesn't stay depressed, but the lights stay on and the little red light comes on, push it again, it turns off
The Lightbar wiring kit is fused and has a relay.

The switch has 4 wires going in, which I've checked the wiring diagram
    Blue/purple- switch input/output
    Red/yellow- switch input/output
    Black- earth
    Red/brown(from memory)- illumination

Now all I did so far to test was connect the positive and negative to the blue/purple and red/yellow wires.. Hit the switch, nothing happens..
Keeping in mind I am not using any factory loom besides the switch and plug itself(with 4" of wire to play with)

I was planning on earthing the black and tapping the illumination(red/brown) into the illumination for the cruise switch.

As I mentioned, only connecting the pos and neg to the switch did absolutely nothing, do all 4 wires (so the ground and illum) need to be connected too for the switch to work?

    Cheers, Cameron

You will find that this switch is a momentary type. Only works while you are holding it, so not really suitable. When used for rear fog lights it sends your signal(you pushing the button) to the BCU which then takes control and operates the lights.

What I am doing for my driving lights is using a cruise control switch as it is latching. If you want the light symbol on the switch the outer cover can be removed and swapped.

This is how I will be doing mine.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

I did read somewhere that the driving lights/fogs were a momentary switch,
But had no idea that it was just acting as a trigger for the BCU..
So my wiring etc will be all good, I just need to get a latching cruise switch instead?
Is the factory loom plug the same for all the binnacle switches or do they have a 'key' to them, ie will only fit the matching switch mechanism- much like the switch 'pockets' only have a certain spot they'll fit in.
    Cheers!

You will need the matching plug for each switch. As for the switch pockets, you can fit any switch in any hole by just grinding off the raised bit along the switch.

You can also do the same for the switch connectors.

There are four different coloured switch connectors - Black, White, Blue, and Green - all keyed differently -

Using a sharp knife, you can 'pare-off' the moulded keyways (on the bottom of the connectors), then any colour connector will fit any switch.

In addition to being a non-latching 'momentary' switch, the rear fog lamps switch is also an 'earth-switching' switch.

In it's factory implementation, it switches a signal wire from the BCU to earth. The BCU detects this momentary earth connection and switches-on the rear fog lamps (as long as the headlamps are also on). Pressing the switch again while the rear fog lamps are illuminated, signals the BCU to turn them off.

A cheaper alternative to the D2 cruise control switch, is the Defender Puma heated seat switch - YUF500150LNF

In the UK, this switch is just over £5.00 new

Switch Assy - Genuine Land Rover at www.rimmerbros.co.uk

It's wired exactly the same as the D2 cruise control switch -

Pin 1 - Live in from fused supply
    Pin 2 - Dash illumination
Pin 3 - Not used (but is internally connected to Pin 5 - Earth)
Pin 4 - Switched live out to accessory
    Pin 5 - Earth

It uses the Black 5-way switch connector.

Awesome, so the Heated seat switch is the same 'module' as the D2 binnacle switches, just has a square face instead of the rectangle binnacle face?
for the sake of $15 posted ive ordered one anyway

Paul. The Defender switch in the photo does not look like it matches the D2 switches. I picked up my cruise control switch from a wreck for $10.

Defender switches (2002 onwards) and Freelander-1 switches, use the same switch bodies as D2 switches.

As do some MG TF and late model Rover cars.

The facia switches and binnacle switches have a common body, the clip-on front is the only difference and these are easily swapped from one to another.

    Thats good to hear,
i saw the square face and instantly thought it'd be a different module
(i actually checked a local wreckers online stock, say they only had a Freelander and instantly dismissed it thinking it wouldn't have the parts required!)

    Update:

Local wrecker had a cruise switch from a Freelander1

Wired the pos and neg for the lightbar all fine however I couldn't work out the illumination and 'on' light

Tried the illum wire from the illum wire on the factory cruise switch
    And grounded the black wire
But only the 'on' light comes on, with the lights on or off, switch on or off..

How does the illum and ground go?
