    Cleaning up chalky headlights

Ahead of finally being able to take the Disco out for the first time tomorrow, the oxidised, crummy looking headlights were annoying me. More than they should have possibly...

Had a look for a set of replacements... and decided to have a go at cleaning them up.
Saw some headlight specific plastic polish... and figured that the polish doesn't know what it is cleaning up. So grabbed some polish out of the garage and had a bash.

Photos don't show either how mucky they were before, or how much better they looked after, but you get the idea.

Just thought I would share in case anyone else was looking for a cheap fix for the problem.

    Before...

    ...and after.

I just used the car polish aswell
if your ever scratching to find some cutting polish you can just use tooth paste

My neighbour cleaned up the covers on my old D2 with some polish specifically for headlight lenses... they came up brand new!

I know it came from Supercheap and I thought it was a Kitten product, but I can't see it on their site...it came in a green bottle.

I can check out tomorrow what it was if you want....

Probably will find they will go murky again quite quickly. As now there will be no protecting coating on the plastic lens. I have done this myself in the past and found even with the "protective" coat that comes with some of the lens recovery kits they dont last.
Would be interested in knowing what was used if these last any more then a few months.

Applying the 3M film will help prevent them going Yellow again.

    Which 3M film?

I've cleaned up lights before using plastic polish. It would be good to put something on them that stops or slows down the yellowing/clouding.

I had the same issue on my Merc ML320. I tried those restoring kits, a Repco one and a Turtle Wax one, both of which lasted ~3 months, which for 50 bucks a go was hardly impressive.

Then I came across a hint to use Autosol metal polish, so gave that a go. You need to use a toothpaste sized squeeze for each headlamp, and each treatment seems to last 6-8 weeks, so an $8 tube will last a few years!

My son came home from the auctions with a late Falcon whose headlamp lenses were brown and crusty. 1000 wet & dry, followed by Kitten No.2, and finished with Silvo and they were like new. Had to be done every 12 months or so with Gumption and Silvo until he sold it.
